When merging from two lanes

to one lane on a typical hwy...wait until the very end. The morons that try to switch lanes 100 yards too soon are the ones who hold up traffic because no one cares to let them in.
When there's no road left it takes choice out of the matter (merge or wreck) thus speeding things up.
This is the way things are intended to be.
Edit: in this scenario traffic is moving along well, but it's still bumper to bumper in the left lane.
Why come to a complete stop 150 yards before you have to? Only to sit there and wait for someone to let you in?

This PSA brought to you by the National Council of How Not To Drive.

And when merging on to a larger highway from a ramp, accelerate to the goddamn flow of traffic. Seeing someone try to merge ahead of me at 45 MPH when everyone on the interstate is doing at least 70 MPH makes me apoplectic.

Zipper.
If people zippered when merging instead of being assholes we'd all move on with our lives.

There's a special place for people like you in hell. One where you have to wait in a never ending line of traffic where someone constantly merges in front of you

wrecking definitely speeds things up

People like you are when I turn the a-hole switch on while driving.
I'll ride the bumper of the car in front of me when traffic is backed up and people try to "cut the line" by riding to the end of a closing lane just to make sure you don't get an opening.

Why? It makes everything move faster...

Exactly what I do. If I had to wait the extra 5 minutes, that a-hole trying to get in my lane can GTFO. I'll probably see this shortly on Acadian with people trying to get on 10E

Wrecking Is not an option here. Traffic is moving about 10-15 mph in the left lane. Merge from the right.

It's fun to stop 1 mile back in your lane, but make no attempt to merge, just to prevent you from moving up. Usually the car behind me (i.e. you) is pissed, while everyone in the other lane approves. And surprise, surprise, I never have any problems merging when I do that. It's almost like people are happy to let me in...once we get to the end of course.
18 wheelers are great for this to.

quote:great post and very true, but as you can see from the replies, it's very unpopular. ironically the same drivers in this thread who think the OP can't drive, the "early mergers" and the one guy who likes to stop in the other lane to block cars, are the ones attributing to a longer and less safe backup.

The late merge method has not been found to increase throughput (throughput is the number of vehicles that pass through a point in a given period of time). However, it considerably reduces queue ("backup") length (because drivers use the ending lane until its end) and reduces speed differences between the two lanes, increasing safety.
Governments hold campaigns to promote the late merge method because irritation, aggression and feelings of insecurity easily occur while "zipping". Often drivers who change lanes too early don't like to see other drivers continue until the end of the drop-away lane, even though this late merging is encouraged by the authorities.

I merge when the car in front of me merges...but block any assholes that try to pass

There will be plenty of morons who merge early, wasting perfectly good roadway and clogging things up. They are proud of themselves and will be mad at those who are "taking advantage" of the situation. They can kiss my

I guess I shouldn't be surprised about the majority view given our location. It's evident on the roads.
