I could have made a killing in the 80's charging people to watch me play Ms. Pac Man, Defender and Joust, if I would have known that was even a thing.

You're not supposed to "get" everything. There are plenty of things I get no entertainment value out of. But I don't make fun of those things (at least I try not to) simply because I don't "get" it.

People are different. That's what makes the world great.

How is it any different than watching sports on tv?

You probably watch people hunting and fishing on tv even though it's an activity you could easily do yourself.

As someone said above, there's something appealing about watching the best of the best in the world competing regardless the activity.

I don't think anything you said is wrong, it's just not for me. As Sabi is saying, people can waste their time however they like, personally I have games in my steam library I've never touched that I would rather play over watching somebody stream.

Exactly. I don't WANT everyone to enjoy the exact same shite I do. And it's nice to discover new interests as life goes on.

It's not something I'd do really, but I get it. Some guys like to watch other people Frick and some like to watch people playing video games, some like to do both

No, this is not the same thing. Watching a football game is not at all close to watching someone watch a tv and play a game on it. In football they're actually moving and doing something that requires some talent that is useful. Watching someone sit on their arse and move their fingers is a lot different and very dumb.

same with gamers

and poker players

there is more "use" out of computer activity than throwing a small ball to a designated spot 60 feet away

this guy gets that we are really watching them play the game and we are actually watching the gameplay, right?

In both instances, the viewer is getting enjoyment out of watching someone else play a game.

It's been discussed ad neaseum in this thread.

ETA: You can't see any use in being very good at video games? Do you know how the Air Force pilots unmanned aircraft?

Yea, but I think that whole "talent that is useful" point of view is pretty interesting. "Useful" is certainly a subjective term...I guess.

ETA: I see you just caught that

Throwing a rock hard and accurate enough to kill a small animal. Probably more useful 100000 years ago.

I think he's got it completely backwards in terms of what's more useful in today's society.

It still just doesn't click to me.

I love watching baseball, but I have no interest in watching people play the latest MLB video game. Same with football. Or soccer. That's not the same thing to me, one of the main reasons to watch sports is for the athletic ability on display.

I have watched poker on TV before but I don't want to watch people playing online poker. Even though there's not much difference in the end.

I know it's a huge industry, but I still can't help but feel it's a bit pathetic. And I say that fully aware that I enjoy things that other people find pathetic. We certainly don't all have to enjoy the same things.

I've seen a group pokemon game where it switched from democracy (people voting on the next button to push) and anarchy (randomly selecting a user to choose the next button). That was pretty entertaining. Especially when Americans would go to sleep and wake up to discover that Australians had screwed everything up. Other than that, I'm with you on not wanting to just watch someone play a game.
