this is probably a game plan for Musk
I disagree entirely.
The smartphone market is pretty mature and completely saturated. Zero chance he simply makes yet another smartphone.
Something to unseat the smartphone? Maybe. But definitely not another smartphone.

And the Model S and Model X aren't even the top 5 selling EVs.
I think it's highly debatable whether or not Tesla is still that far ahead of the competition.
This surprised me so I looked it up. Depending on whose ranking you believe the Model 3 & Model Y are in most top 5s. The Model S is listed in some top 5s and others have it just outside of the top 5.
But the biggest take I saw was Tesla had various models make the lists and most of the other companies had 1 model. So even if a particular model isn’t #1, the fact that they have 4 (3 above + Model X) in the top 10 would imply he’s still far ahead of the competition

Like EVs and rockets and space based internet that are about a decade ahead of the nearest competition?
They make great stuff, but it's always late. I wouldn't hold out on replacing a phone for this until it's real.

They are. No one else has storage tech and a proven track record of BESS performance that comes close. Tesla batteries work, everyone else's probably due but there just enough data outside of HALT to say they will

Here's where I got the numbers.
Looks like the ranking was done by Cox Automotive (Autotrader, KBB, etc.).
There's another one here, by US News & World Report. Not a single Tesla model in the top 5.
I'm sure there are other lists where Tesla performs better, but if there's such variation it's not too far-fetched to say Tesla isn't 10 years ahead of the competition.

Tesla as a tech/battery company is absolutely ahead of the game. But I view that value stream as separate from the EV division.

He is going to revolutionize the mobile telephone sector with a battery operated phone.

It is, do not know why Apple people are so weak. Apple did a great job of trapping their users in their system.
It was a great business plan, it is why I have owned their stock for some time. Does not change the fact though.

Agreed. Their non ESS EV tech is pretty ordinary. Self driving is good but getting passed because of poor hardware decisions, and build quality is meh. The EV drivelines are good, but then again so are everyone else's because that's the easy part. The battery storage and management is the real key.

AT&T and Verizon just recently signed long-term deals with a satellite broadband provider called AST SpaceMobile (whose stock is blowing up the past month).
Apparently you do not understand the concept of low latency and high bandwidth. There is nothing close touching Starlink right now. Your company does not even have a satellite in space yet

You probably should have gone with Project Kuiper as a possible counter.

With Musk, that could be a safe assumption as well.

So what? While I'm a big Musk fan in general, it's just going to be another Android/Google phone.
It's not going to have a new or different operating system.

They app store side is what will drive it. MSFT windows phone was better than apple and droid at the time, but apps were the doom of it.
He would have to have an app solution/offering. Global "cellular" availability and lower monthly cost could bridge gap, but humans are slaves to their apps. They could focus on browser and main social apps first though, followed by financial and productivity. The rest of the worthless 10,000+ apps could come in time.

If they make it past startup and concept, I am sure SpaceX will love taking their money to get those into space.
Starlink wasn't built to provide cellular data. Have you seen their antennas/modems? Not quite to scale for a mobile phone just yet, eh? He just recently launched a handful of sats capable of servicing mobile phones. In other words, he's not much ahead of SpaceMobile and surely doesn't have the backing of behemoths like ATT and VZ.

You underestimate the patent thicket that has the mobile phone market locked down by the big players

Most people are clueless with how far Tesla is ahead of the game but hey "its just a car company"
