You are paid. But you likely have to come back to work in less than 12 hours. So less sleep for the nurse. Means they are likely to start off tired and more prone to making medical errors.

That’s how massive errors happen.
I can see that, but that’s not the point of the thread. The point is how the nurse is affected, not the patient.

the er docs i know do not need more money and would glady stop working so much and have a healthier nation...
people's lives involved here...yeah i had a stressfull job recommending were to drill a well and spend 20milion dollars...but no lives were on the line...these front line responders are on an entire different level of stress i can not even comprehend....nor could i have handled it...

Gotcha. Like I said earlier, I appreciate your responses. I’m not trying to flame, just trying to wrap my head around this being anything other than “my 12 hour shifts used to have a lot more free time in then then they do now.”

Depends on what is going on during those 12 hours. There were 10 of us hospitalized with C19 in September. Over 40 now....they are hustling now

Had a male nurse tell me he was developing ptsd. He works at a small hospital with almost no cases

There are some really really dumb responses in this thread. My wife is a travel nurse and has been paid very well this year to go from ICU to ICU around the country.
However I know she’s also been fricking exhausted. Pretty much what the other poster who is a nurse said is spot on. No the majority of them don’t want your sympathy. Just because a few you know bitch on social media doesn’t mean they all are like that.

Well it should be easy to understand that mentally and physically exhausted nurses aren’t gonna be at their best critical thinking skills.
Also...wears their immune systems down more, making them more susceptible to getting sick. Causing the unit to be even more short staffed.
You can’t just float any nurse in the hospital to help out in the ICU. It is a nursing speciality that requires a lot of special training and experience and good critical thinking skills.

Not an ICU nurse. But all the ones I have known over the years are the least whiny nurses you will ever see on social media.
ICU nurses are a totally different breed. They are more likely to tell other nurses whining to STFU.

They've been worshipping the health care heroes (not the nurses fault) locally like its a religion, and we have had very few hospitalizations. In fact our hospital was damn near shut down.

I think the issue is that normally ICU nurses have really bad shifts on occasion. They expect that and know how to deal with that. Shifts they are just overwhelmed and exhausted. It’s when it’s almost every single shift you work...that’s when it takes a toll. Knowing you are walking into that each and every shift, Feeling guilted into working extra when you really should have a day off to destress to help out cause you don’t want your coworkers to drown.

Exactly. My wife literally hates the slurping the media is doing over nurses etc. She hasn’t made one social media post about it this year or anything. They know it’s hard work, but they’re getting paid damn good to deal with it. Doesn’t make seeing people die every day any easier but it’s just a fact they are being paid really well right now. The ones posting all over social media are probably not even true RNs, lol.

Yep, nurses here are really low key. It's the virtue signalers doing the praising.

Which is what makes them damn good ICU nurses
They aren’t scared of the docs and will question their orders if they feel something is off.
Which is good in a teaching hospital (like where I work at). Can help prevent possible major errors a new resident could make ever reach the patient.

ICU workers always deal with 95% full units where people die constantly
The covid ICU survival is actually slightly higher than Overall ICU survival. So the workers are not seeing anymore death or workload. So that bullshite needs to die. One could argue the stress at the beginning was higher due to the panic of potentially catching the virus before survival rates were known

Perhaps they are tired of watching more people die than usual?
ICU's at capacity?
I guarantee you most of the “healthcare workers” complaining are those that never actually deal with covid patients, and most likely aren’t RNs or doctors at all......
ICU nurses and docs are rolling their eyes at them

Most of our employees complaining the most about the humanity of working are those that don’t ever come close to covid patients. A shite ton work outside the hospital period

I don’t understand what good bitching and moaning about being tired is going to do.
It’s just something people seem to do for attention/small talk. Me personally, I hate small talk in general at work. I also can’t stand when people act like they’re there to make friends.
