When did the cap and gowns graduation ceremony craze for elementary kids start?

I'm seeing this all over social media. 1st graders and such wearing caps and gowns and getting a certificate of graduation. I don't remember seeing this before but it's everywhere now and I have to be honest, I don't like it. I don't haven any well thought out or reasoned arguments for why I don't like it, but I just don't. It just feels like an expansion of the "participation trophy" culture to me, and goddamnit, if these kids don't get the hell off my lawn!

I love these posts. My dad is 75 and he's got a picture of his kindergarten class graduating in caps and gowns. I never did that nor have my kids, though.

Kindergarten it's cute and I can deal with that - but my daughters school had a full on cap and gown mass and ceremony for 8th grade "graduation". Even my daughter and her friends thought it was pretty damn over the top.

The sane thing is happening is daycare now. My cousin "graduates" from daycare next week. I send my cousin a "congrats on bot having to pay $150 a week now" card when they sent his picture.

Well I'm 27 and we had "kindergarten graduation" with cap and gown pictures in 1995.

There sure is a lot of bitching here lately about little kids' graduation.
It's just an event for parents to take pics. It's for the parents. Don't let it ruin your day and if you want, keep your kids from participating. I'm sure it'll make them grow up tougher or something.

Back in the mid-late Seventies.

Where did your dad go to kindergarten? I started 1st grade at 5. Was no kindergarten back then.

Lulz. My kid isn't going to that shite.

It's 2016. Graduating high school doesn't mean shite anymore and graduating with a bachelor's doesn't mean a whole lot more than that but I don't hear any squawking about ending those ceremonies so let the little 5 year old peckerwoods having a moment, for Christ's sake.

Good for him, big city boy! He probably was one of the first.

According to the posts in this thread, it's been around a while. However, the popularity of the event has increased concurrently with the prevalence of participation trophies.

I wore a white cap with green tassel with a white shirt, jacket and shorts for Kindergarten graduation in 1976 at a school that spanked for not doing voluminous homework and playing with your neighbor's feet at nap time.

It's about as stupid as giving kids rings, like they do now at baseball tourneys.

Thread last week about this. Study how it turned out for him.

My somewhat urban junior high school had 8th grade graduation. The pomp and marching and shite they planned was embarrassing. I thought it was ridiculous and said I would not participate.
This was a first for them and unimaginable. They made me get parental consent. Then several other white kids also dropped out of the ceremony.
I also skipped the college ceremony. Bow Ring bullshite. No ragrets.
