I’m 45.
I’ve told the story here before. But I knew I was different at seven years old, I realized I wanted to be a girl at 10, and finally had a name for all of this after going to the library at 13.
I’ve struggled with it for 35 years. I played college football, became an Army officer and the poster child for all-American dude. I thought I could squash it and block it out, but ultimately couldn’t. After a couple of deployments overseas, and developing a really bad drinking problem, I finally broke down one night in March 2017. It came out of me like something I had never felt before. Telling my wife how I felt through choking sobs.
I retired from the Army in 2018, after 23 years, so I fell under the old DADT rules. I couldn’t come out when I was serving because I couldn’t transfer to the reserves when I was selected for promotion to O5/LTC. This was due to the no new accession clause under the transgender military ban. I had started hormones a couple of months prior to retiring.
I’ve been in transition for 25 months. Still early on as this is a 3-5 year process. My wife and I love each other dearly. At one point we were going to separate but that didn’t happen as she asked me to stay (long story). But our love has changed, and is more complex than we ever could have thought. It could write a lot more, but I’ll keep it short. I know I get a lot of flak on this site for being what I am. I only hope that I can tell my story and let folks know that people like me exist out there. And lastly, I was born in Baton Rouge to two LSU alums :) So yeah, I still bleed purple and gold.

She’s an incredible woman and they sure don’t make em like her. Our relationship has grown ten fold, but it’s still fragile. At this point, we are one of the lucky couples that may make it. Many, or I should say most, don’t last.

It’s basically a second puberty, so imagine what girls and boys were like at that age. Hormones are powerful things and they do a lot to the mental side also. It affects everyone differently.

Good luck with everything brother bear. The Pacific Northwest is probably the best area in the US to transition and the summers up there are awesome

I spent 2 summers in Bellingham, WA about 90 miles north of Seattle near the Canadian border and loved it.
The people took a little getting used to for a 19-20 year old from Central but the scenery and weather were outstanding.

I moved here in 1998 as Fort Lewis was my first duty station. Currently live in Olympia. Absolutely beautiful scenery nestled between the Black Hills and Olympic mountains, Puget Sound and Cascades. We’re going camping on the Oregon Coast this week :)

It's probably about my ideal area of the country from a weather/topography standpoint. I'll never get my wife to move thousands of miles away from the kids though.

Sad. It’s changed a lot in the last 15 years for the worse. The downtown has gotten bad and full of drugged up transients and bums. We live near downtown, so our area is still pretty nice.

That’s unfortunate, Seattle was the same way last time I was there. Lots of junkies just hovering around aimlessly. It’s a shame, because Seattle is such a cool city
