In 1986 I was hired as a grunt to work for a contractor at the Exxon Refinery in Baton Rouge. I was introduced to my field foreman who asked if I had showed up to work or to waste his time like the last guy the company hired ? Before I could answer he began flailing his arms and saying work is that way, gate is that way, where do you want to be? I handed him my brand new hard hat and began walking towards the gate. He stopped me, and appeared surprised. I think he thought I was a stupid kid and that he could intimidate me. I really didn't want the job in the first place and that sealed it. The guy had to drive me out and asked me to reconsider because it looked bad for him now. I ignored him and quit anyway.

Got laid off from oil field when it crashed a couple years ago. Picked up a cash job working for my neighbor cutting grass and driving the truck for $12/hr. I worked for one day and hot poison ivy then just told them I quit.

That’s pretty damn good pay for a 16 year old in the 1990s.

Yeah I made $4.25/hr in the 90s. I'd have probably cut grass with scissors for $8

About two weeks at Milano’s Pizza on Jones Creek Road in the summer of ‘88. Started in mid July and wasn’t supposed to go to MCRD San Diego til December. Was planning on starting my freshman year at La. Tech after Labor Day weekend...so it was going to be a short term job anyways.

Get a call from my recruiter(Sgt. Chivers) in late July and tells me some kid broke his arm and he had an open slot for August 10th. I said “what the hell”...might as well get this over with. Quit work the next day and proceeded to get drunk every night for the next couple weeks.

3 days at Pizza Hut at 16. Basically 3 days of washing pans and 3 minutes of making pizzas was all I needed to see about ever working a food service job again in my life

Mine was 2 days. It was my first job out of college. I got the job 2 weeks after graduating. I was just excited about getting a job and I didn't really ask any questions. Then I started the job and decided it wasn't for me.

One shift at a call center that was extremely scummy. Needed the cash so I stayed the day instead of leaving after hour 1.

Gonna help a friend of mine tear down an old 2-story house for lumber. Got drunk the night before and left a fine girl in my bed when I left for said job. Made it about three hours all the while thinking of the fine girl I had left in my bed, plus the hangover hanging over me. We gone.

Went to work with a landscape guy right after Katrina. Had my own business as a kid and did pretty well. We cut a few lawns then showed up to a house where a huge tree was cut down and someone grinded the stump and left it. Was a pile as big as a car and damp. Guy gave me a shovel and a roll of trash bags. Lasted a few minutes and started walking home. He followed me and asked me what was wrong. I told him he needed to rent a bulldozer or skid steer and kept walking.

McDonald’s in the 1970’s.
Cooking burgers at 16 yrs old and there was a 17 yr old girl interested in talking to me.
She asked my manager if she could meet with me.
He gave me a break to talk to her.
She said she would give me BJ, so I left with her.
Worked out for me.
Got a BJ, new little friend with benefits that was 1 yr older than I was, and a new job bagging groceries for tips at a grocery store that had ladies night. I saw a lot of boobs and short skirts that year it was glorious for a 16 yr old.

I had a client hire some temps (at $15 per hour ten years or so ago) to stuff mailers into envelopes. At the end of the day, they discovered a typo and told the envelope stuffers that they would need to come in the next day t0 remove the defective mailers from the envelopes (and be paid for the work, of course).

Black woman stands up and loudly says "I'll tell you what ... you hired me to stuff them mother frickers, not unstuff 'em." She walked out.

This may be the "best" employment resignation I've ever seen, and I've seen some wild ones.

At 15, we hoed cotton for $1.25 an hour, worked every day sunup to sundown. It was the mid-70's, and we thought we were rich. Spent a lot of time on a hay hauling crew earning nickel a bale too.

1 day

Assistant baker for a large industrial bakery. I may have amplified just how much experience I had on my resume, but I aced the interview.

10 hour day that started at 4am.

I managed to break a Hobart Mixer, ruin 3 speed racks of baguettes (because I didn’t tuck the seems properly) and completely frick up on croissants (which are difficult as shite to make).

Called my boss that night and said ‘nope’.

I ended up renting out Space Walks after that for much less money but lack of stress was worth it.
