What’s your bottom line on hobby spending?

In response to the boat thread the other day where bass boats are running in the upwards of $100k.
Whether you fish, hunt, play golf, go mud riding, travel, whatever….is there a price point where you’re out whether you can afford it or not?
Example, I can afford a $100k bass boat but it just seems idiotic at that point so would move into some other hobby. If you enjoy traveling but flights went to $4-$5k. Even if you could technically afford it, would you still do it?

Do hookers & blow count as hobbies?

I don't budget like that. The wife and I have a bi-weekly discretional spending account where we move money in twice a month and thats what we spend on hobbies, shopping, dining out, entertainment, etc.
Larger expenses like travel, new bikes, new golf clubs, etc. are budgeted into monthly expenses when we know we are at a time of year when our normal spending may be down (usually late spring).

Sure. If strippers and partying were your think but lap dances went to $80/per vs $20. Do you still go put that girl thru college?

So if the hobby started exceeding your budget plan, do you adjust your budget plan or just quit doing what you enjoy and find something else?

Fishing, hunting, and mud riding have never held my interest to the point to invest a lot of time and money in them. The amount of money people spend on those three things is insane but to each their own. I try not to judge until we are doing an eviction on people that have a side-by-side, boat, and two $80k vehicles but failed to pay their house note. It happens more than you think.

If the expense what we have budgeted and there was no way I could spend less I would either have to quit doing something else or quit that hobby.
For example, I used to race close to 10 sprint or olympic triathlons from memorial day through October but at that time I wasn't playing much golf.
The cost of a race entry is around or over $100, plus food, hotel rooms, etc so now I might race 2-3 times over the same time period BUT I spend alot more on golf.
As the wife and I have gotten raises and our income has increased we usually increase our discretionary spending in accordance

I'm into cars, guns, and games so 110% of every paycheck is reasonable IMO.

Is there parking outside of your studio apartment that allows boats?

Models are not that expensive. Most of the ones I buy cost anywhere from $20 to $75. I usually buy anywhere from 1 to 4 a month, plus paints and other supplies.

Don't really have a budget, but I'll buy the store brand grocery item to save $1, but not think twice to drop $5k on car parts.

Every hobby can get expensive, you can fish off of the bank with a bucket and a couple of cane poles for very cheap. I can guarantee you that only 1% of the bass fishing population is dropping $100k+ on a bass boat when there are other alternatives that can help you fish competitively in tournaments.
Everyone's situation is different but $1k/month towards your hobby should be a reasonable limit.

That’s me. Spend several thousand a month between cars, 4 wheelers, hunting, and guns.

With model railroading, I don't buy anything new. At all.
There are so many estate sales and eBay listings where you can get something for half the price that it usually goes for new.
Except if it's a Big Boy... that's like crack to the foamers. They'll pay $700 for a used Athearn one with a broken gear.

So when your hobby exceeds $1000/month, do you just give up on your goals or go all in? Quit doing what you love to go find another passion?

Get creative, you don't need to buy new. Like Vols above me said, there are plenty of estate sales, garage sales and classifieds to find the equipment to fuel your hobby.

My bottom line is I will spend until the wife gives me too much shite about it. Lol. (Which she rarely does). A few years go I came to an epiphany. I would rather spend money now enjoying the things I like than die with that money sitting in the bank. Money has no value until you spend it. Enjoy life for it is far too short.

I buy a new camera and lens system every year. So a couple grand at least on that one.
