You posted this at 1:30p on a Sunday in the summer. What did you expect? Need to be on the road no later than 8am to avoid it.

Oh I know this. My wife and kids stayed another day but I had to get back home for work. Today was one of the kids’ birthday so I stayed and we took her to breakfast then did birthday cake and helped pick up the big stuff. It was just as bad when we went through Mobile early Thursday afternoon on our way there

The answer is to get up ridiculously early and hit the tunnel before the peak. It results in further boosting the Destin economy because we have to hang out at outlet malls for 4 hours before check-in, but I digress.
I've often been diverted by Google through the old tunnel downtown. Not as awful as it sounds.

It’s all about timing. I used to work in the Mobile area. On a weekday I once went though the tunnel 5 times in one day with no problems. That would never happen on a Friday or Sunday in the summer.

There is a route from orange beach/gulf shores back to I-10 @ the bay and can completely avoid I-10 or beach express. You get on 59 N and take a left by a gas station right after you cross over the “big”bridge. Then it’s backroads except for a short stint on 98. Don’t remember any road names just know the route. Use it going and coming if I’m traveling Fri-Sun.

Any other suggestions?
Leave early
If you leave the coast at 10:00, you are going to sit in traffic in Mobile.

BR traffic is way worse. The whole city is a shitshow, not just one main artery.

New Orleans to Pensacola was backed up the entire way. Kept waiting to see a wreck or something. Nothing. The Bucee’s past Mobile was like going to Disney World. I really hate that Texans found out about the Florida panhandle
