30 years ago, maybe, but 20 years ago, pop music was boy bands, Brittney Spears, and Christina Aguilara. Focused on talent, not sex, my arse

People in their mid 30s-early 40s didn't grow up with all these 60s and 70s bands either yet they all talk about them like they're the pinnacle of music. I'm 41 and I never went to school with anyone who listened to the Rolling Stones or Beatles. If you were into rock it was Nirvana, Pearl Jam, RHCP, Metallica, or one of those other bands that blew up in the early 90s.
Even as a kid in the 80s I listened to Van Halen, Aerosmith, and all the hair bands because they were on MTV all the time. Led Zeppelin and those types of bands were old people music.

Yeah but an argument can be made that at least those people were vocally talented. Today..... nope. Country is the same sounding people with the same theme of lyrics. Pop contains few vocally talented people.
I must admit I am a fan of Ed Sheeran purely because the guy has talents and keeps his show simple and humble.

I’m late 20’s, and most of my hs friends either listened to only rap or only the heaviest of metal. If you listened to rock music with lyrics that could be understood, you were the biggest, gayest, pussy wussy on the planet. Classic rock was largely seen as lame, especially hair metal, which was seen as extremely gay. Pink Floyd was popular only with stoners, and most of them grew out of it by hs.
Girls listened to either rap, country, or a few of the nerdy alt girls listened to mainstream emo bands like panic at the disco and fallout boy.

That’s the typical reaction. No one like the shite their parents or grandparents like.
Is it that hard to realize and acknowledge that kids these days think 80s dad rock is lame?
Like I’ve said many times in this thread, tastes and preferences changes and evolve over time.
The idea that the dad rock of the 1960s to the 1990s is somehow the pinnacle of music and will be loved for time immemorial is laughably stupid.
Just because you don’t like the current music doesn’t mean it doesn’t take talent or skill or isn’t liked by the masses.
Finally, all music of every genre has its time and place and vibe.
New music doesn’t automatically equal bad like so many of the boomers in this thread seem to believe.

I mean, Bruno Mars and Charlie Puth are insanely talented.
Bro country is this generation’s hair metal, and I believe it will collapse rapidly in popularity much like hair metal did in 90-91.
Bro country is just hip hop for girls scared of black people. It’s party music about drinking, smoking, and dancing, exactly what redneck teenagers and 20 somethings want to hear while drinking. It’s also got just enough “romance” to separate it from rock and hiphop which have largely abandoned love songs as a popular topic.

rock and roll
I will be honest the lack of rock and roll, especially hard rock is disappointing.
As for as country-rap, I have no problem with the two genres collaborating, but as for as music in general, are artist encouraged more today to be solo artist?
There just isn't as many bands or groups today.

All the trash, cringe music of the older eras has been forgotten. What is still played is the best of the era and has skewed people perception of the past.
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug and the current generation of youngsters are going to cause the world to end.
These are time tested truths.

Terrestrial radio pulled the plug on rock music in 2005 and completed phased it out (outside of classic rock stations) by 2012. It was replaced with stuff like The Revivalists, The Lumineers, Coldplay, Mumford & Sons, and Bastile. Now, that folkish stuff is being replaced by Billy Eilish, K-Flay, and similar.

What's funny is that 10 or 15 years ago, when Millenials were young adults, they typically claimed to listen to "anything but Country and Rap." Seems like most of the bands they liked were hipstery-looking, eclectic, and folksy.
I always rolled my eyes at that shite so I can't complain if Generation Whatever is listening to Country and Rap... except maybe for the fact that it doesn't seem to be very good Country or Rap, but "whatevs."

Yellowcard in the early 2000’s was the worst.

I listened to a lot of my parent's generations music growing up - Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Lynyrd Skynyrd, old county etc.
My daughter listens to a lot of 80s/90s music.

Billy Eilish,
I have never really listened to her music. Does she appeal more to the teenagers?

Coldplay,
You know how I know you are gay? You listen to Coldplay.. I am just quoting a movie.. But Coldplay does kind of suck.

Cool story Anecdote Andy. It does not disprove my general thesis that dad rock is generally considered lame by kids these days.
And if you are cool with 50 year olds you are probably thought of as weird by your peers.
