Time to introduce her to alcohol and DMX and let nature take its course. EVERYONE loves DMX while drunk. It’s the universal language

I went to SF about 5 years ago and was looking for a cool bar with live music.

Damn near every place that advertised live music was nothing but DJs. I'm not knocking it, but the idea of going to a venue to watch a dude play on his laptop sounds lame as frick to me.

Because most rap is totally nonsensical. Its almost a completely different language with as much slang as possible. That wouldn't be a problem if it used a language that was usable in the real world, but it isn't. Most rap is trash.

Yes I listen to "rappers" from time to time. Kanye West, Jay-z, Eminem etc.

It hasn’t infected LSU?

That makes me happy.

Calling someone born in 2000 a millennial is dumb. Thanks to the rapid advance in tech, they experienced a drastically difference childhood compared to someone born in ‘83 or even ‘93. They never knew a time before the burst of the internet and social media.

That’s because you’re thinking of vocals as a melodic instrument for storytelling. In modern rap, the vocals are used as a percussive instrument. Once you realize that, it makes a lot more sense.

He used to listen to nothing but rap and dubstep a few years ago and I was getting worried.

He's turning into one of those people that listens to everything now. I hear ragtime and zydeco and Devo and all kinds of random shite coming from his room these days. That's cool though. Way too much great music out there to spend all your time on a couple genres.

I wish I had his access to music at that age.

Venues like DJ’s because they’re cheaper and less risk than hiring full bands. Bars are ruled by the preferences of single attractive white women aged 21-30. Guys go where those girls are, so bars play the music they want to hear. A huge subset of the women who like to dress up, go out, get bought fancy expensive cocktails and shots are into EDM, so DJ’s are an easy option for bars.

Every large town has band bars, though. You just need to look for them.

He was asking about what kinds of guitar-based music young musicians are playing. I took one scene as an example simply because it is the scene with which I am most familiar with.

You understand why it is a bad argument, right?

quote:

Baton Rouge is actually a really great barometer because it’s actually incredibly large and diverse for a city its size, lacks a signature sound or band that everyone tries to emulate (very unlike Seattle or Nashville)

Both Seattle and Nashville have incredibly diverse sounds. Bands like Jeff the Brotherhood, Pujol and others are based out of Nashville. I don't think you know enough about either of these scenes. I've played with musicians from both, as well as with bands in Baton Rouge.

quote:

has its own home-grown pedal and gear companies affiliated with said scene (Komet amps, Rougaroux pedals, etc)

And PreSonus, I believe.

quote:

As a result, Baton Rouge consistently punches well above its weight class as far as producing original music. The scene here for rock is arguably superior to much larger markets like Denver, Phoenix, Tampa, Jacksonville, Charlotte, Milwaukee, etc.

I mean, most of those cities weren't known for their musical sensibilities. BR being bigger than those scenes doesn't make it a good barometer of wider musical sensibilities at all. It's actually an insanely stupid argument. I could make the same argument using lesser known bands from large metropolitan areas and have it more salient to the point.

quote:

It’s certainly nowhere near as influential or large as Seattle, Portland, Austin, L.A., Athens, Atlanta, Chicago, or NYC, but it’s a pretty solid mid-market.

I played in the BR scene a long time ago. It isn't even a solid mid-market scene. Olympia has a much better scene, with nationally known bands, as it was and is the epicenter of the riot grrrl scene.

what's a good place for live rock bands around here (south sound)?

I lean more towards punk but like most any kind of live rock.

If you’re cool in the eyes of 50 year-olds, you’re probably extremely uncool in the eyes of 20-somethings. Same as it ever was.

I had to go to Seattle anytime I wanted to see a band, unfortunately. The South Sound has surprisingly little music infrastructure despite its large population.

In terms of Seattle bands, Dreamdecay is a post-punk band in Seattle that was gaining quite a following. Chastity Belt was a group of lesbians that actually had a pretty decent album that I liked a couple of years ago. They were kind of scary to see live though.

So mid 30's dads who make 150k /year listen to crap music to be "cool?" Got it.

Seems like it was a good place. I didn't like 6th very much after I nearly got into a fight with a fat dude Seahawks fan by the Irish pub. Only went for MSM. Apparently Agent Orange is playing there, if you are into the original surf punk stuff.

I used to drink at The Forum by that arcade place. That area needed a venue badly.
