Mongomery (the T is silent to the locals) is a hole with a chip on its shoulder.

Hard to believe this place is the capital of any state including Bama.

I'll grant you pretty bad.

But, if Jackson, MS and Shreveport, LA aren't 1a and 1b, they will do until a trashier city comes along, IMHO.

Is ghetto the same as trashy?

If we are talking ghetto, it’s BR, Memphis and Atlanta

I don't think they're the same, but are related concepts.

The problem is - to varying degrees, those cities have some redeeming characteristics. As do Miami, and some of the others listed here.

Jackson stands head and shoulders above the other candidates because, try as I might - I got nothing redeeming to list. Maybe I'm just not as familiar, but my goodness what a shithole (as is Shreveport, for the most part). I'm sure both cities have nice neighborhoods for people with money, but that's true of everywhere.

was talking to a Ft. Worth detective the other day, over a 12 month period Mobile had 53 murders to Ft. Worth's 52, probably 4-5 times the people in the Ft. Worth metro area

I was informed that if USA Health (level 1 trauma center) was located anywhere else in Mobile, Mobile would have the highest murder rate in the country.

Grew up in Memphis. While the city is mostly shite it has some pretty nice parts.

The entire north side of Atlanta is super nice, whereas anywhere south of downtown is ghetto wasteland.

I had the misfortune to spend almost a month there last year, son was in NICU, the shite that passed through there was incredible, one night some gang bangers just drove through the entrance and dumped a guy off who'd been shot up. hell. the reason I was talking to the Ft. Worth detective is that I've been subpoanaed to testify in an attempted murder trial just because of what I saw and heard regarding another patient in the NICU

Because that's not what trashy means. Everything you said was true but trashy is the wrong word. Although, I take exception to, "surrounded by wastelands". A lot of people like swamps and marshland. Hunters and fishermen. Trappers. Eco-tourist. People who are into haunted and creepy shite.

When we talk about trashy here we are talking about white trash and ghetto. Kenner and the West Bank are trashy. New Orleans has ghettos for sure but it's certainly not a majority of the city. Nowhere close to it.

Besides, New Orleans has massive redeeming qualities and a lot of uniqueness. New Orleans is like one of those poor Caribbean countries. A lot of dilapidated charm mixed with old money beauty mixed with dangerous locals mixed with corrupt and incompetent government mixed with gorgeous architecture mixed with unique local customs and culture.

Trashy is not the right word. fricked up? For sure. But trashy? No.

ETA: also, what is it with people putting Atlanta and Miami in a group of the most trashy cities in the south? To me, most trashy means the city that is mostly trash. A city that has the highest percentage of trashy areas for its given land area. That's certainly not Atlanta and Miami. Those two cities have a lot of uber rich neighborhoods and a lot of middle-class as well.

The right answer would likely be one of the mid-size cities with weak economies like Jackson Mississippi, Montgomery Alabama, etc

You have to admit Nola is one of the trashiest cities for a few weeks out of the year.

Sure there are nice things to visit, but be here after the streets flood. It's pathetic the amount of litter that accumulates in the gutters and sidewalks once the water goes down.
