5, 7, 12, 20, 31, _____
5 + (2+0) = 7
7 + (2+3) = 12
12 + (2+6) = 20
20 + (2+9) = 31
31 + (2+12) = 45
fricking lawn wrangler beat me to it.

+2,+5,+8, +11,+14, +17...just keep adding 3

You add 2 then 5 then 8 then 11 then 14 which makes the next number 350

45
7-5 = 2
12-7 = 5
20-12 = 8
31-20 = 11
45 - 31 = 14
The difference between the two sequential numbers is always equal to three.

45
5,7,12,20,31
+2, +5, +8, +11…+14
(+3), (+3)…
(n + 1) - (n) = 3n - 1
Second difference is three, and as this is constant we have a quadratic sequence which follows N = an^2 + bn + c
Quadratic Sequences
Follow link to derive how to calculate values of constants, I’ll spare details.
a = 3/2
b = -5/2
c = 6
to know value of n, formula would be
N = (3/2)n^2 - (5/2)n + 6
5,7,12,20,31
+2, +5, +8, +11…+14
(+3), (+3)…
(n + 1) - (n) = 3n - 1

I always hated these types of questions because I had to force myself to answer the first pattern I saw because the longer I looked the more patterns I would see. My initial answer was 45 but there is a legit pattern that gives 51. Someone might argue that it needs parentheses to reach that answer but you are never given any specific rules for the pattern question.

2,5,8. Difference between each number. Next number will be 14+31 which equals 45.
