So we get to toss out behavioral aspects of an animal if we don't like it?

Also, for that portion of the discussion we were discussing apex predators. So, wolves hunting in packs is completely valid to the conversation.

Look at this giant pussy hiding from a bunch of cows.

Here is another vicious cat having it's apex predator privilege checked. Don't those hyenas know who they are messing with? One of the all powerful big cats!

Edit:

I like this one. Hyenas and lion facing off while that jackal just lies in the background waiting for the scraps. "Hey, you guys work this out, I'll be unobtrusively resting over here until you're done.

I'm not a big fan of the lion either. bunch of lazy arse's that steal from others to survive simply b/c they are bigger than everyone else.

As a kid, you're kind of lead to believe hyenas are the bad guys. Lion King helps with that as well. But the more you read up on lions, the more you realize they are more like what you thought the hyena was like than the actual hyena. they kill hyenas just for the hell of it. they kill cheetahs just for the hell of it, even though if they were smart, they'd want them alive so they can catch the animal and then steal it from them.

They are nothing but bullies. over half of the food they eat is stolen from someone else or from an animal that is on it's last breath. They aren't good hunters at all. The vast majority of the time you see lions and hyenas fighting over a kill, the hyena is the one that made the kill.

That happens a lot though. Bald eagles do it to young eagles and ospreys all the time, and that's our national symbol.

Pretty much all predators kill the predators smaller than themselves, be it for territory or competition for some prey items. As Mel Brooks made famous in "History of the World...," it's good to be the king.

Take here in the United States for example. Part of the reason we have so many raccoons, skunks, and possums is because the wolf has been extirpated from most of its range. That is also what has helped the coyote expand its range east.

I scanned through it in 10 seconds and realized there was no fight, thus it being pointless and didn't watch it.

Fact is the full grown grizzly in a one on one fight would destroy every other animal on the planet except maybe a polar bear if fought on ice. Any other place and it destroys them too.

An elephant or hippo would stomp a grizzly.

So.....you do know that lions hunt in packs too, if you want to call what they do hunting. Lions savage and steal more than hyenas

That's why I said tigers. Four tigers stalking an animal together in a jungle setting is a world of difference than 4 lions chasing a gazelle across a open grassland.

If Tigers hunted together, then you'd see them have to kill elephants and other large mammals, like lions do, to feed the 3000lbs worth of 4 tigers hunting together.

4 Lions aren't chasing gazelles. A gazelle is barely enough meat for one lion, much less 4, and lions don't have the stamina to catch fast animals, which is why you see them scavenge so much.

I just think this was more of a mano e mano hypothetical.

1 of each animal in a Bloodsport tournament.

Yes i know that. We were having a discussion over a tigers success rate if they did hunt in packs

Perhaps the overall point of some of these arguments are, but the statement you quoted of mine was in regards to "apex predators" by continent. In which case, wolves hunting in packs is valid to that conversation.

I have never said, anywhere, that a wolf or African wild dog is a one on one match for a tiger or lion.

Those cows are actually cape buffalo, considered extremely dangerous because of their mass and aggression.

They wouldn't be as successful as wild dogs as evidenced by their solo success rate and estimated by the success rate of lions during group hunts.

On a purely predatory basis (hunts turning into actual kills), African wild dogs beat out all the big cats, regardless of hunting strategy (solitary vs. group). That is not up for debate.

No fricking shite? Hmm...do you think that's why they were never domesticated by the peoples of Africa?

I also hear that Cape buffalo are considered to be part of Africa's Big Five of dangerous game when it comes to hunting. I was surprised to hear this, because I just assumed they were docile cows. And considering the other four are the lion, leopard, elephant, and black rhino, how does a cow fit into that list, eh?

Of course I know what those animals are, it was a joke trying to point out that lions don't dominate everything like one poster seemed to be claiming.
