re: What’s the deal with driving like a bat out of hell with your flashers on.

True story, I got a call that my stepbrother was dying and I was driving fast, but not like a maniac, with my flashers on trying to get to his house. Some people got out of the way, most acted like they didn’t see me and some people actively cut me off or blocked me in. From that point on, I got the heck out of the way when people have their flashers on because while you may think they are just being an impatient a hole, you don’t really know what’s going on.
I've done something similar once. Wasn't a dying relative, but a medical emergency. I was out of town and a guy on the crew got cut pretty badly and was bleeding. We strapped a belt around his leg, put him in an SUV, and I had the keys. We made it to the ER in about 7-8 minutes, and it was 12 miles away from where we were. He ended up needing a couple of surgeries. I didn't use the flashers, but I always get out of the way if I see flashers.

I always assume it's an emergency situation if someone does it. Rarely ever see it happen.

Old school thinking was to use your flashers when speeding in an emergency situation, to alert a cop to your need for escort. It would be up to the cop to decide if your emergency justifies speeding. For instance, if you were in a vehicle and your kid was choking to death, put your flashers on and go for it. Nowadays it's debatable whether you are better off staying put and calling 911. Being late for work doesn't make the cut.

Maybe they have an emergency like a passenger who needs medical attention in the ER.
This happened to my wife about a month ago while she was in Monroe. She woke up on a Sunday morning and couldn't breathe very well. Brother-in-law had her from Swartz to the ER at St. Francis in 10 minutes. No way an ambulance would have gotten to the house and then the ER in that amount of time.

About 35 years ago, my stepfather's dad was dying in a hospital near Ville Platte. My mom and dad left Baton Rouge and headed onto 190. A cop stopped them for driving too fast but found out the reason. The police officer then radioed the police further west and my parents put on the flashers and got to Ville Platte just in time before my stepfather's dad passed away.

even worse are the people that think slapping the hazards on all of a sudden allows you to park wherever you please. trying to run in the coffee shop but there arent any spots available? no biggie. just double park and put the hazards on. nobody was using that lane anyway

CSB- I was in Myrtle Beach for work when I got a call that my 8 month pregnant wife (seen below) was having issues and they were going to have to do an emergency C-section. The situation was very iffy and I needed to get home immediately. I could not find a flight out of Myrtle Beach that would get me home that day. I checked Charleston and they did in fact have a flight but it took off in 3 hours. Which meant I had to make the 2:50 drive from Myrtle Beach in about 2:15 to have any chance of making it. I phoned the local sheriffs office and told them my dilemma. I gave them a description of my rental and the plate number and told them that I was going to put on my flashers and haul arse to Charleston. They told me under no circumstances could I exceed the posted speed limit. I did anyway. Each time I would enter another county there would be 3-4 sheriffs deputies sitting in the median. Each time I just knew they were about to pull me over. They never did. I was in a Nissan Maxima if memory serves and I kept it hammered the whole way. Made my flight right as the boarding door was closing. Got home and to the hospital an hour before the birth of my 2nd kid. A perfectly healthy little girl. Good times.
