Get a few estimates from guys that grind stumps. I guarantee you it's cheaper than renting heavy equipment, will be a lot easier and with less collateral damage than other methods. I went the "cheap" route and used a mid size excavator years ago to dig up a bunch of large stumps. It worked great except that it compressed the ground in some spots and I had to bring in a bunch of dirt to smooth it back out.

I cleared 62 stumps to below ground level with charcoal on my 2 acre property.

Don't sleep on that tactic.

Dig down under them then lever them out.

That's the maddux I was referring to. But that's some back breaking work. Probably put blisters on his wuddle, bitty hands too.

I've burned stumps like people have mentioned, but it was by cutting the stump at ground level and then cutting grooves in the stump with the chainsaw and pouring something that will burn slow all over the stump and let it soak into the grooves for awhile then light it. It will burn for a few days, but it leaves a hole.

Of course all this was for tree stumps. For shrub stumps with roots running every where the maddux worked because you have to cut some of the roots from the main root ball before you can pry/dig it out.

There's really no good way to get shrub roots out other than hiring a Mexican to do it for you.

Your answer is charcoal. Regular charcoal.

I did this on a few big ones in my yard. It worked. I checked it often and had a hose close by just in case.
