Ours was an abandoned Lab mix who showed up sleeping under the porch.

The family's first dog, she was smart, loyal, and saved the toddlers from water moccasins twice.

She proved herself so fast she was soon sleeping in the house.

I've had 3 Labs. When my male died, we decided to get a Goldendoodle. Smart as a Lab, but don't shed. Now I have two. Love the water, great with kids and will protect you and the family. But I gotta say, with all the dogs I've had, my 1st Lab still has her picture up in our house. Never been so depressed as I was when she passed. It's hard to go wrong with a Lab. More chill than my Goldendoodles, but I don't miss the shedding.

Same, in spite of the shedding. I love Boxers, too. Fairly high maintenance, but always entertaining.

American Bulldog. Big, strong and loyal. Looked like she could eat you, but was the sweetest animal I’ve ever been around. Not a pitbull

Dachshunds hands down. So incredibly loyal, great security systems. The most loveable little guys. Just want to be by one of their people. They're convinced they are the size of great danes. Beyond smart and just hilarious. Have my two laying in my lap sleeping as I type this.

It's been much easier to have one older dog and one younger one.

We were down to one dog when our Great Dane passed, and it's been brutal.

Which ever one will not attack you or your family. But they all are pretty dumb animals.

Came here to say this. Most of the people claiming they have guard dogs really have no idea what they are talking about until they’ve seen a Brazilian mastiff in action. Really really smart dog. And despite the aggressive, protective nature of them, ours was fantastic with children. Both our kids and even neighbor kids. They could come and go as they pleased and do whatever they wanted to the dog. Adults would need permission to come inside before the dog would let them in

Great dogs for places where most of the breeds would just be a snack for coyotes and alligators. They are incredibly tolerant with children. The buckets of drool, though. Ha!

Agree on shih tzu. Mine doesn’t bark and they don’t shed.

Sheltie. Smart, beautiful, affectionate, obedient, intuitive. She was a great watchdog, but also great with people after being introduced. I miss her still, and probably should get another.

My family has always been partial to Boston Terriers. They're an awesome breed IMO.
