Because the problem isn't:

_6^2_
(2*3+4)

OK. I can buy that, but then what brought down Building 7?

The TI says that the answer is 58 and that most of you are functionally retarded.

I'm waiting for someone to break out the "well, that's not how they taught me at my school" card.

This is not an arguable topic here. Math has logic which is followed. This isn't even high level math. I'm pretty sure that every ACT/SAT test will have a problem like this on it. You SHOULD learn this in high school!

Kanye West. Thought everyone knew that?

The levees during Katrina were Bush's retaliation.

Two possible answers here:

Traditional order of operations yields 58.

HOWEVER

apparently many math texts have historically treated everything to the right of a division symbol as a grouped term. So basically this becomes
6^2 / (2(3) + 4)
Which is 3.6 and highly unsatisfying.

now that i think about it traditionally then a ./. sign is used in lieu of a / sign everything before is the numerator and everything after is the denominator.

Now how do we know that PEMDAS is the correct way to solve shite? Why can't another order be more correct? During school we learned this, but not sure if we learned why it is so. Maybe some math guru can explain, as I am asking for a friend.

Because we have to agree on some things in order for math to work.

If you want it another way, that's fine, but you need to convince everyone to accept it.

All of these kind of problems are complete nonsense.

Its 10.

6 Squared is 36

36/6 = 6

6+4 = 10

This seems extremly easy for the OT.

Am I missing something?

You should first divide 36 by 2. You are multiplying the 2 by 3 first, which is wrong.
