, no, you're correct.

ETA - Plug in the problem exactly the way it is worded into a calculator. The answer is 58 folks.

No, you had it correct. The parenthesis are a trick. Since no math takes place inside the parenthesis, it's just multiplication with the 2.

58?

36 / 2 x 3 + 4

18 x 3 + 4

54 + 4 = 58

since theres only a number in the parenthesis and not an action i think you don't do parenthesis first. so the exponent would go first. but don't quote me

You have to multiply before you divide.

No. He's not. No matter how you write the equation you still have to PEMDAS

(6*6)/(2*3)+4

36/6+4

6+4

The parentheses in this case only contain one number, not a separate calculation. Thus, it is multiplication. Now, apply PEMDAS. Remember, multiplication and division are paired and done left to right.

58 is the correct answer.

You solve this problem by going left to right. Order of operations say you must divide 36 by 2 before you divide it by 3 because multiplication and division have the same weight in this example.

Poorly written question, because they don't explain what exactly to the right of the division sign is in the denominator. It could be just the 2, the 2(3), or possibly all of the 2(3) + 4.

Since they didn't both to clarify, I'm not going to bother to answer.

ETA: I would go with 58 though, in the absence of more information.

How do you know? Did you use a scale?

Why are you adding random parentheses?

Yes, he is.

The P in PEMDAS says you do the argument in parentheses first. In this problem the only argument in parentheses is 3.

6^2 is 36. Then you work from left to right with division and multiplication. 36/2 is 18. 18*3 is 54. Add 4, = 58.

In order to get 10, you have to change the problem. It would be 6^2 / (2*3) + 4
