It has its moments. You could probably land a side gig on weekends and go from there. One thing about the industry, you either have it or you dont. It will be apparent very quickly. There's much more at stake with fine dining, have to be able to execute, but the ingredients tend to work with you. If that makes sense

What's the first thing you holler when an employee breaks a plate or glass or anything in the kitchen?

As a side hustle, you should go try to get a part time gig cooking short order at Waffle House or a local breakfast joint. You are a hell of a lot more likely to be able to get a job there than at a white tablecloth. I actually thought running the griddle at Waffle House might be a sort of fun one or two day a week retirement job.

I was a Pantry cook and it was great. Just make salads and deserts. Then I got bored and switched to a grill cook. It was better, really hot but not as demanding. It was the Copeland's in BR like 20 years ago. Then I went to Cheesecake Bistro.
Was a mix of young college kids, old locals and you always had a work release dishwasher.
We would be slammed all the time. Constantly busy. I had a few 16 hour shifts too.

I also worked as a cook at a hotel and it was a lot easier. Set up the breakfast buffet. Then name a few meals here and there. Not as demanding. Good jobs when you were in a T-Th school schedule.

If you really want to scratch that itch go work at a Waffle House. You'll hate or like it desire to move to a nicer place.

Yeah, I'm not doing that. I'd be happy with 15-20 hours a week. I still work average of 56 hours a week at my main job

I am a working chef, and I am jealous of my hourly crew often. very little responsibility, free food and plenty of waitresses to chase. go find a decent pizzeria and learn to toss some pies if you wanna try the industry out. it's fun, and most pizza places don't have seriously demanding menus to contend with.

Try to get a job with a catering company. A lot more flexible.

Do you work for an appliance repair company or own your business yourself? If you own, you still gun ho with it or get burned out? I own my business but after a over a decade I sometimes get tired of being my own boss

Occasionally happy new year. Had one boss that would keep a five gallon bucket in the kitchen with all the breakage. He would add up the cost to him and make sure those responsible knew all about it. shite happens but some people are prone to it.

Own it. .

So what i did was hire an office manager. So she sets my schedule and does all my booking. I can over rule. But it keeps me from being lazy. I would get bored abs take a week off because I could. She Keeps me working over 10 hours a day and my pocketbook thanks her.

On the side I try and invent stuff. I build things. I mean yeah it burns me out at times with all the taxes and insurance and stuff. Paying monthly to five parishes is a pain too.
