re: What's a good way to phrase people who can't accept good fortune of others?

that's not how "optimal" works
we're talking stats, expected values, risk-reward, etc. it's all math
In that case everyone should drive a beater car until it dies, never eat out, never drink alcohol, never travel, forgo any sort of luxury brand in anything, and basically devote all money after the most spartan of necessities to future financial growth.
And then what, die without experiencing much of what life has to offer?
In my opinion they key is finding that optimal middle ground for yourself.

Or they define personal success much differently than you do
working to succeed doesn't have to be financial
no matter what you do in life, you have to work to become competent. that takes discipline.
from Zen in the Art of Archery
quote:
The archer ceases to be conscious of himself as the one who is engaged in hitting the bull's-eye which confronts him. This state of unconscious is realized only when, completely empty and rid of the self, he becomes one with the perfecting of his technical skill, though there is in it something of a quite different order which cannot be attained by any progressive study of the art
that unconscious guide is competency. that takes work
you don't have to profit from it or be motivated by money. this applies to anything in our life (including loving our friends and family. we don't just automatically know how to do this best. we have to become competent at that, also)

Yeah, this conversation became wishy washy.

again, this isn't strictly about finances
finances and material ownership scale, anyway. we already live a life of extreme luxury from a historical perspective. the trade off of having to drive a beater instead of a beamer is utterly meaningless in the context of human history. hell it's meaningless over the past 200 years of human history

see nobody said that. go back to my example about law school and Europe. i can go to Europe 2-3 times now while spending less total money than i would have had i gone in law school and taken out loans.
if your goal is to see Europe, there are literally thousands of ways to accomplish this. some will be much more optimal than others

Not necessarily. A lot of people are miserable living an unfulfilled life. It's common to be in your 20s and not have it all figured out

Well, you're the one who said it's all about the math.
As much as I'd like to agree, some things just can't be answered with math.

that's the goal
again, this doesn't mean that life is static or you can't adapt to changes. it's about having the best strategy possible to deal with these changes and make the best, calculated decision when they're required.
everyone creates a strategy. the biggest difference is how big they make it. even when you act like your plan is to do nothing, that is a plan at the end of the day. even if you make a plan to let life sweep you up, your still have a plan and you STILL have to make decisions within that paradigm
as humans we all have a need to make sense of the senselessness that is life. IMO this is your version of that phenomenon.

everything i posted was about having a more fulfilled life
competency makes us happy
i didn't say material possessions or finances or wealth. i said competency
you don't have to know who you are to be happy. that is an impossible goal for people, even ones who are old, intelligent, and wise. that's a silly thing to have as a goal being 20 (i know you agree with this)
the point is that because it's so accepted (again, terrible advice), it becomes an easy excuse (because everyone almost universally will understand, b/c pretty much no person ever figures out who they truly are)
the problem is that there are almost infinite goals or skills these people could target that would make them happy over the long term. think of it as modern Zen. you work on these behaviors to perfect them as much as you can. that makes you competent and that, makes you happy. it's not about money or material things. it's about focusing on the moment and making the perfect action
that's how you build happy people
decision-making is the same way, generally

Yep. Wealth can be figured objectively with math, but not success. We always make trade offs between quality of life and resources

life isn't senseless, though. it's probably just less meaningful than most people want to admit
we are creatures that evolved. we have biological limits and desires/fears. we created society so we're done evolving for the most part. we are still learning what we are, from a biology/chemistry/physics POV, but we have a good idea. i just don't think it's nearly as profound as people, especially from Western Culture, wish we were
and what i'm talking about has a lot of science behind it, but it also has a ton of philosophy/religion, too. what i'm saying is fully compatible with many major eastern religions/philosophies (buddhism, taosim, parts of confucianism). this isn't fully material

Sounds like GDM needs to do a better job of knowing his audience, and keep his braggy mouth shut when BDM is in the room.

Yeah, I'm trying to. Understand the need to discuss it with people who have no interest. Seems like insecurity

Right. And that’s fine. What I’m saying is don’t complain about your situation if you aren’t working your arse off to change it. Like SlowFlo said, it’s not strictly about money. If your thing is chilling on the couch after Work smoking blunts and playing video games and your happy/content then more power to you. But if you’re doing that and complaining about how shitty life is then you need a grip on reality. Maximum results don’t come with minimum effort.
In my own case, I’m not rich by an stretch. I want to improve me and my family’s situation. But instead of bitching I work every day at it. I have a good job. Healthy family. No debt save the house. Bills always paid on time. I have it pretty good. Just working towards financial freedom so if I got fired tomorrow it wouldn’t be a life changing event.
I could be living in a third world country waking 5 Miles a day for a pot of dirty water.
People lack perspective

GDM should keep his financial info private.
BDM should grow a pair.

exactly. i'm in no way maximizing my economic value but i'm OK with that
if that dude on the couch is happy that his friends are [insert some improvement/success], then OP doesn't apply to them
this is about that dude on the couch who responds to his friends [insert some improvement/success] in a negative way (and why we can't call them out on it or risk being called braggarts)

Now this I totally agree with. 99% of the people you talk to won’t give a shite about what you do/don’t have.

you can call it random, but it's not senseless
i mean at the most basic level, we're a sexually reproducing species that has evolved from elemental debris of the Big Bang with the primary goal of passing our genetic material down to our progeny. you can strip everything about humanity or life away and that statement is still true. that is a purpose of our life, no matter how hard you try to reject it.
you don't even have to get to metaphysics. just basic biology
