I think they are the stupidest thing on the ball field, my son has asked for one a couple of years. I told him absolutely not, everybody he plays with on his summer and school team wears them.

After getting hit in the elbow several times this year I finally gave in to the elbow guard but he will have to lose a finger before I buy a sliding mitt.

I hate all the crap these kids wear in games, nothing worse then a kid hitting a double and the whole game is put on hold so he can undress and run crap to the first base coach.

I jammed my thumb catching. I caught in little league but this was just at school recess and the teacher told me I didn't need a glove. Doc said it would have been better for it to have broke. Wore a dag gum brace for two weeks and it hurt continually. I wussed out of catching after that.

I put this in the same category as bats.

A $500 bat can’t fix a $5 swing.

I played a lot of baseball without protective gear (except when catching). But then again I fractured all my fingers and both thumbs multiple times. A dislocation hurts and surgery even on a finger can cost someone their All-State senior season as it nearly did me. I took off two splints to play in the games then put them back on afterwards. Haven't be able to bend the proximal interphalangeal joint of my right middle finger for decades. Also got an elbow smashed by a 95 mph inside fastball. So I can easily see the value now of protective gear. Better to be on the field than watching from the dugout in a cast.

Majority of baseball players are pretty boy pussies which is why I played football. No chains, funny hair, mirror shades, gay hand signals after a hit, etc. some are tough badasses though.

My son has wanted one for a while, too. And a Bruce Bolt compression arm sleeve. And Bruce Bolt batting gloves. Jesus. I’m hoping it gets better after middle school. The only thing that I remember like that was wanting Nike socks and the stupid wrist bands for basketball in middle school.

Anyway, I told him that I think it’s stupid, but I will get it for him in exchange for 6 weeks of 75 pushups each night for 6 nights a week. I guess if he does that he really wants it.

Billjaminaxxxon has a couple custom ones to match his different team uniforms and bats. Pointless if you don’t have matching oakleys though.

That’s the kind they all want. $85 bucks each, and they have these “limited edition” versions.

If that mitt is not purchased and personalized for your child, then you are a terrible parent. Think of all the extra stolen bases Ricky Henderson would have had with a sliding mitt. You need a couple $500 bats too, or he's never getting on base to use that mitt.

If you're not spending at least $5k to outfit your kid for a couple months of summer league baseball, then the state should confiscate your child.

As a coach, they’re a pain in the arse. A kid gets to first, I’m trying to signal him and he’s staring at his hands trying to get that oven mitt on.
