Giving up cursing in front of your kids is a good one, assuming your kids are young and impressionable

I am not giving up anything, but I am going to church everyday. So far I have done well. We will see in two weeks.

Beer and sweets.
I'm not religious, I'm just getting a beer belly on top of my chicken legs and figured I'd use this as an excuse to stop the rapid midsection expansion.

I mean, I'm no practicing Catholic. I give something up (or attempt to) in the same way I'd give something up for a new years resolution.....just a self betterment thing. But can anyone in any organized religion really say giving up something for lent is confusing, or not understandable in the grand scheme of religion, yet you can follow all the other random insignificant things done to worship in any and every religion
How is it Biblical to give up something out of sacrifice and then tell everyone what you've given up? Where does Jesus require we do this on the day of Lent?
How is this any different than a New Year's resolution?

Green Beer, except on St. Patty's Day.
