I'll try to keep this short...

My co-workers threw a baby shower for one of our employees and his wife last week. We were told to RSVP if we wanted to partake in the catered lunch. I didn't RSVP due to a conflicting conference call. I did, however, have a leftover cupcake after they were placed into the all-employee break area.

I was asked to - and did - donate $10 toward the shower gift. This morning, I get this email:
...this is a friendly reminder that you each owe $8.00 for the food for the baby shower...

The $8 is no biggie, but should I reasonably be expected (like it's a job requirement) to pay for a lunch I didn't participate in?

I suppose I'll go ahead and pay, but I'm wondering what y'all think of this.

I'd pay just because of the optics if you don't.

No. If you didn't RSVP and you didn't have lunch, you don't owe them anything. Cupcakes in the employee break room are a free for all.

If cupcakes aren't for everyone, don't put them in the break room.

Unless literally everyone in your chain of command is a dude, I would pay to avoid what would surely be intense female drama.

No.
The catering company should have based the number of servings they provided on the RSVP responses.

Why would you pay if you didn't eat anything? Just say you didn't attend and leave it at that.

It's actually not at all...it's just that almost everyone grew up together besides a handful of us.

It's definitely the most family-like workplace I have ever seen. So maybe that's part of it.

Go with the $8 and politely explain your frustration. Don't be confrontational but also being passive aggressive won't get you anywhere either.

I have actually said that already...I still got the email.

One guy who was on vacation last week also received the email.

While I don't think you owe for the food, this is one where you might do well to suck it up and pay. If your workplace is as nice as you say, no way I would risk fricking things up over $8.

ETA: Then send the guy that wrote that email a bill for his part of what you eat at your fish camp this weekend and say "sorry you couldn't make it."

It was just bulk email. You did not participate. Don't worry about it. Don't pay.

Then you don't owe anything.

ETA: Did you reply saying that you weren't going to be there for the lunch? Or did you just not say anything?

Give them $7.50. That way it's not that big of an "office conflict", but you still get to give them 50 cents worth of f**k you.
