The US death count will end up exceeding 9-11, so I think it will certainly be remembered in the end.
Some proposed measures are too drastic but others certainly have and will limit the spread of the disease. Overall, I think we have done pretty well so far, could have done better with a swifter response.

50% of people think its ridiculous and overblown.
50% of people think theres a lot of potential to create real harm to citizens.
Both sides think the other is ridiciulous and that only they know the truth.

For the Record as of Feb. 15th 2020:
31 million Americans have caught the flu this 19-20 season. 12,000 people have died. 1,383 of those were from Louisiana.
As of March 24:
Louisiana has 1,388 cases with 46 deaths related to Corona Virus.
At that trajectory 41,731 Louisiana people will have to get the Corona virus for the death total to match the FLU deaths in Louisiana for the 2019-2020 Flu Season.
The 3.3% infection to death ratio is what we are attempting to limit by staying at home so hospitals aren't over extended. I don't think what we've done to-date is overblown but this also shouldn't last more than a couple/few weeks to get under a manageable control.

Kinda too early to answer those questions, but we're going to see it hit the business schools for sure in management, accounting, and ethics classes.

How many people die from pneumonia every year in the U.S.?
Do we need a news ticker for every car fatality?
What we lack is context. Coronaviruses as a group are estimated to cause around 20% of the cases of pneumonia every year. We don’t know for sure because we don’t test every case of pneumonia to see which virus caused it except the flu. Yet plenty of people of all ages die from non-flu related pneumonia. We’ve never had a news ticker keeping track of every death by Coronavirus.

Well if it doesn't mutate and start killing people in 24 hours like The ”Spanish Flu” did... A large portion of the world will say it was overblown. If you lose a loved one or several people you care for, you would likely it was a tragedy. Time will tell

Considering that the President's approval rating is currently 49%, I think you are off on both of your figures by 1 percentage point.
