Only technology becomes obsolete, not oil reserves. For economic analysis of Petro issues see Daniel Yergin's work.

There will always be oil jobs from the depths of the ocean to wall st.

Nothing to see here other than typical flatlander luddite query.

There are 542,000 electric cars on the road in the US.

LINK

There are 263 million cars registered in the US.

Just some numbers to throw around.

Shipping and freight make up over 40% of the demand for oil and rising. Until electric 18 wheelers and shipping barges come around, this won't be an issue.

Personal transportation is a large demand as well but that isn't impacting it as drastically as the current oversupply is. The demand is constantly rising while the supply isn't. Oil prices will be back. Just might be a while.

Yeah, obviously it will have a small impact. Just because more people will require less gas, but in the next five years... It will not be enough to really have a big impact on anything.

It'll take more than 5 years for electric cars to be the norm.

Especially when you consider that most electrical power is generated by................oil or gas.

Not to mention the power it takes just to make the batteries, and the plastics that coat the batteries......

OP didn't think this one through at all.

What do you think tesla's are made of? Unicorns and fairy wishes?

Forget that Tesla may be belly up by 1Q 2018.

A strange thing happened to me this past weekend. The wife and I were cruising down I-12 doing 70 mph and got passed by a Tesla. There's a first for everything I guess.
There will be a demand for oil for years to come. More fuel efficient cars will mean more cars...

It will rebound. Their big test is the next 9 months. If not done right it can/will break the company.

I work for a Fortune 500 company and oil is a major commodity of ours. The low prices are saving us millions of dollars quarterly.

Does anyone live or work in the Jefferson/Essen area? When I worked on Essen, just about every day when I would come back from lunch (if I was coming back from Jefferson), there use to be this older guy who would drive this white... I am pretty sure it was an electric car, but it only had two seats in it. It was almost like a street legal golf cart.

If anyone knows what I am talking about. Do you happen to know what type of vehicle that is/was?
