I love scifi and in the books I read there is a plethora of ideas and concepts to help break free from Earths gravity, but realistically what do you think will be the first technology to deliver a reasonable payload safely into orbit?

I love the idea of a space elevator and given advances in material science with things like carbon nanotubes this might one day be feasible. Man kinds biggest obstacle in being a truly spacefaring race is just getting off this rock in the first place.

I would love to see a pair of nuts dangling from the backside of the ISS. Unfortunately it would cost probably 10k in taxpayer dollars to get them there, which might be worth it.

My Dad always told me that if I talked back one more time he would knock me to the moon. I never tested his promise but it seems like a pretty cheap way to escape Earth's gravitation pull.

I would imagine first and foremost to collect and mine resources in the asteroid belt etc. long term it would be good to diversify our living situation just in case of a cataclysmic event on earth.
