Me too, except I was playing Punch Out! around '86 at Lakeside mall, it was a hole in the wall arcade space, I think next to JC Penney. It was like a long hallway that felt more like a long egress hallway leading to the exit, rather than an arcade fun space.
Anybody remember that? Sorry for going out of topic.

84-85 was peak "80s" vibe, but by the end of the decade everything began falling off a cliff in fast motion.

Peak "best" 1980s was... 1981.

Why?

The late 70s-early 80s hybrid of extreme freedom and expression when nobody cared about "trends" to that point.

1981 was also just before all the PC crap hit the fan everywhere in the culture;
before the Fem-Hair Bands and over-use of Electric drums and synth; before the insane inflation of the mid-80s when house prices began skyrocketing and the entire culture first began to show signs of instability & insanity.

I was only a kid, but ‘84-‘87 were the greatest. Things started to change in ‘88 at least for me.

Too many media-inspired events listed there.

I don't think 80s "highlights" for the vast majority back then were of Gorby, We Are The World/LIVE Aid, Space Shuttles, New Coke or especially the Ozone Hole "discovery."

Your instinct/vibe was spot on.

I also regard 1988 as the first year the vibe didn't feel so "80s".

Dunno.

(Never heard of it. Was Disney responsible?)

Sports wise it is hard to argue against 1986.

Don't forget Lawrence Taylor and the Big Blue Wrecking Crew.

The 80s didn't really have a peak - it was just a prolonged run of unparalleled greatness. It's like asking when Seinfeld or the Beatles peaked.

This. To me, peak “80s” means roughly from 83/84 to the summer of 91.

The entire 80' was so fricking awesome. Especially, as a teenage.

I'll go with 1986 since I graduated high school, got accepted to LSU, and scored a spot in the trumpet section in Tiger Band. That was the year all the dreams came true for this little kid from Kentucky who had bled purple and gold since he was three years old.
