The subway in New York City in 1976. It was noisy, hot (no ac), dirty, dangerous and every square inch covered with graffiti. I was sure if it was not hell (at least purgatory for you Catholics). I visited last year and it is now clean, safe, air conditioned and if you have the money, NYC is not a bad place to be.

Most every shipyard I ever worked in,building ships is some rough shite, and it takes rough people to do it.

The heat, noise, smoke, smell of fuel and sweat,it will get the best of anybody,so people are always on edge and fighting.

Steel mills are rough too, but I always preferred that to shipbuilding.

If you are talking about a town, I will just end this thread with Gary,Indiana.

Hottest of all would be on the beach in destin in july. Beautiful but miserable. I could easily see someone having a heatstroke there.

Anyone that thinks the Badlands in SD is "hell on earth" I feel sorry for.

The Badlands are wonderful.

Taking the shortest route from Moab,Utah, south to I-40,you will go through some very depressing Indian Towns,it's worse if you go through in a dust/sand storm,it's still better than Gary,Indiana, because at least they can wake up in the morning, walk out of their doors and see some really stunning scenery around them. Not in Gary, Indiana.
