One of my memories from Long ago... early/mid 60’s, driving from NOLA to Independence, Tangipohoa , on old 51. It was basically two lane, no shoulder, tar and pebbles roadway....can still hear the pebbles hitting the underside of the old ford fair lane

You got that right!

Mom's side of the family was from near Shreveport, Dad's from near Monroe. To visit when we lived in Metairie was such a PITA. We'd head over East into MS then take I-55 North, then turn back West and go through Lake Village for Dad's family. When we moved to Memphis it was South on I-55.

Keep in mind, Dad surveyed for I-20 starting as an intern with the State while majoring in Civil Engineering at LaTech.
