One of my financial advisors told me back when he was 10 or 12 years old he could go in a store and purchase a pack of cigarettes but he couldn't get one of the disposable cigarette lighter which had started being sold. Apparently the manager was more concerned about him starting fires than smoking.

There were certain stores where you could buy alcohol as a teenager in the area I grew up. The stores were owned by certain "families" and probably paid off the police. They would charge a lot more if you appeared underage.

No one got busted for underage drinking that I remember. The cops would usually just pour it out. Same with weed.

Edit: I see the comments about the music. If you scanned the dial on your cheap AM single speaker radio in your POS 70s car, about all you got was disco from 76 to 80. Crap.

That’s why you install the 8 track tape deck.

South Seas parties

I was a bit behind you and 777 but I attended many of these parties while I was in high school. We would just show up and start drinking the jungle juice.

We brought girls with us so we were never questioned by the brethren. Good times.

We always headed over to the Country Place on Nicholson, just over the Iberville Parish line.

Every time I hear Black Dog by Zeppelin I think about it. That song was forever playing on the jukebox.

Black & white beginning to make progress in everyday life interactions. Music was probably the best ever. Vietnam still going on for the first few years and when it finally ended the heroes who served our country were not properly welcomed home. Wages were pretty low but prices were, too. College wasn't a must-do like it is today, lots of plant jobs for the locals in the river parishes. Disco competed with rock in the mid-70's, both were awesome. Lots of clubs and music venues to go dance and meet girls. Payphones instead of cell phones. Had to keep lots of quarters around. 8-track tapes took up a lot of room in your backseat or trunk. Buying water in a bottle was unheard of. Only a handful of fast food restaurants around. Volunteer Army replaced the draft.
I could go on and on but I'm feeling a little sad that those great days are gone for good, except in our memories.

I remember life being better then, compared to now. Less stress, less high tech.

Baton Rouge as a whole was a lot less dangerous than the knocking on third world's door it is today.

That and Jerry Jeff Walker's perfect country song.

We used to go every weekend after 2:00 AM until a drunk guy got run over out there and the cops put so much heat on the place that they shut down.

It may have been the combination of the long handbar mustaches and long hair and clothing typically worn, kinda ratty, that gave me that impression.

The 1970’s
It seemed like everyone had a love affair with the white powder. And it really wasn’t that frowned upon.

When I was 10, my 16 year old brother would give me money every day to ride my bike to the corner store and buy him cigarettes and candy for myself. It got to the point where the guy behind the counter would pull a pack of Marlboro for me as I walked up to the counter.

I go in there with my mom one day, and as we approach the counter he puts a pack of Marlboro in front of us. She tells him she didn't ask for cigarettes, he gives me a look and pulls the pack back.

After that I'd ride my bike an extra three blocks to go to a different store.
