IMO, Lafayette area represents the good stuff about Louisiana. Authentic cajun food, music, language, hunting/fishing etc.

Baton Rouge (and to an extent Shreveport) represent the other side of the coin. Corrupt politics, dysfunction, poverty

You think Lafayette is immune to these?

Shreveport is too much like East Texas

Shreveport Demographics
Black - 56%
White - 37%
Hispanic - 3 to 4%

Tyler TX Demographics:
Black - 22%
White - 49%
Hispanic - 24%

This is one of the most common, very incorrect statements on TD. Shreveport is nothing like East Texas as the Demographics are vastly different. Much more like Mississippi Demographically than East Texas.

Didn't know this until now, but Shreveport has the highest percent of metropolitan population as Black in Louisiana, and 6th highest in US (behind Jackson, Memphis, Macon, Montgomery, Columbus GA). Baton Rouge 9th and Nola 12th.

The political climate in Lafayette is light years ahead of Shreveport or BR. Lafayette is a well managed city and parish for being in such a dumpster fire of a state.

As the capital and home of the state's flagship university, it probably is the closest thing to an amalgamation of all of the state's "cultures" as you are going to find.

I agree with this. It’s not glamorous but Metro BR captures a lot of the state’s different cultures. It’s pretty representative compared to someplace like New Orleans that’s really just its own thing entirely.

Shreveport Demographics
Black - 56%
White - 37%
Hispanic - 3%

Beaumont Demographics
Black - 47%
White - 28%
Hispanic - 18%

Shreveport has the highest % Black metropolitan in Louisiana, and the 6th highest in the US. Trailing 1st. Jackson, then Memphis, then Macon, then Montgomery then Columbus GA. Nola city is higher, but Metarie, Kenner, Northshore is mostly white.

High crime per capita, low economic success, failing school systems, rapidly declining downtown. Flooded with fast food, fat people, and crappy infrastructure. Truly the pinnacle of Louisiana culture.

BR Metro

You have EBR which has corruption, crime, and terrible roads/traffic.

LP is like the redneck representation for BR and AP is the cajun/bayou representation.

The unofficial capital of the part of Louisiana whose economy is based on timber and speeding tickets is Alexandria. Alexandria has nothing in common with anywhere else in Louisiana though.

Fun fact: Ellick has two synagogues within three blocks of each other. They're not on speaking terms.

Ruston is the center of culture for north Louisiana, but it's still Funroe centric in many ways.

IYAM there are three different subsections to North Louisiana. Ruston is ground zero for red clay hills Baptist country. Monroe is the border between hill country and the Delta. West of a Natchitoches/Shreveport line is a different area entirely.

and people who are from there think it’s the greatest place ever, but it really sucks

Just like if you inserted any other Louisiana city/town

But you can’t have much fun in BR like in other places, and food is mediocre
