Some of the colonies minted their own coins prior to Independence.

Regular U.S. Mint coinage began in 1792. Indian Head pennies were struck 1859-1909.

Can you post pics of a few of them? I'd keep all that shite. Seriously.

No shite? How does that work?

It is not through an exchange rate . Waiters, valets, etc. love to get two dollar bills. When I was in New Orleans last week, I tipped the parking valet with five $2 bills. You'd have thought I gave him $20. When I needed my car, it arrived in a hurry. I was moved ahead of other people. Tip recipients love to receive a $2 bill - it is special to them.

Did you know that Indian Head Pennies weren't minted until the mid-1800s?

I don’t know the first thing about Indian head coins and I never claimed to

Indian head pennies weren't produced until 1859.

Almost every coin imaginable is sold on eBay. Go find prices on eBay searching the CLOSED sales. Do not pay attention to prices set on a listing when it hasn't sold as sellers put stupid prices on their wares all the time.
OP, this is good advice.

If you are near Metairie, visit Causeway Coins and ask for Mike (the owner).

I’ve known him for over 25 years and he’s always been an honest businessman.

He’s got brick and mortar overhead in addition to not working for free so he has to “buy low- sell high”, but he’s not going to abuse you like some other folks.

Avoid any/all pawn shops, they generally pay ~50% or less on value.

There are subtleties to coin and currency condition that can drastically affect the value.

Just because you have the exact same date and mintmark coin as one you see that sold for “x” on eBay, your coin may be worth much more or much less than that one.

It takes a trained eye to correctly do a correct valuation on collector coins and currency.

Pay them for the evaluation. Their time is worth something and then you can get a second opinion.

Look up sold prices for each on eBay and either sell or keep.

I took a silver coin to a dealer to have him look at yesterday. He quoted me $55. The exact same coin has sold for over $100 on eBay - don't trust anyone.

No it was a shoebox. Found a cool app called called coin snap going to mess with it this weekend. Attempt to maybe category them see if my teenager is interested in doing that. Don’t think I would ever have a reason to sell them unless it was something insane.

Ok, so when did we establish federal currency? I think it was around the time of the Civil War.

Are you experienced in evaluating coins to make this assertion?

I am, I’m credentialed and have been messing with coins since around 1970.

Please post detailed images of both sides of each coin here and I will confirm or refute your opinion.

There are crappy coin dealers on the street as well as on eBay to be sure.

Additionally, just because someone paid $100 for a single coin on eBay doesn’t mean that $100 is the actual Fair Market Value, the purchaser could have paid too much for the coin.

I have on occasion paid too much for a specific coin to finish out a series or for a presentation set.

There are very clever forgeries of US Gold & Silver collector coins coming out of (who would ever have guessed it) China.

Again to my global point about messing with collector coins, you need to either be an expert or find an expert who you trust.
