There are a number of great diving spots in the area. If you're not a diver, La Jolla Cove is a cool place to go snorkeling with sea lions... It will be crowded and the water will be cold, even in August.

Make sure you bring an actual drivers license that's not expired. I left my license in my car when I was there last. No big deal since I'm in my 30's and had a state issued Id and several credit cards in my name. There wasn't one club that let me in without an actual license.
