You can come to my place and rescue me from 7 year old girls at my daughters birthday party.

Civil Right Museum is very powerful.
If you like motorcycles then the Barber Motor Sports park is amazing.
Went to Post Office Pizza this weekend in Avondale and it was phenomenal.

Lot of good recommendations in here.
Saws BBQ is a must do.
Carrigans/Collins bar are the new trendy bars with a quality caliber of people.
Avondale Brewery is where all the retired frat stars hang out.
If you want some nicer restaurants, I'm a huge fan of Highalnds and Chez Fon Fon. Also give hot and hot a look.
Birmingham is in the middle of a major turn around. It will be exciting to see what the next few years bring.

The Highlands area close to five points is cool. Plenty of quaint areas in mountainbrook, irondale areas. Plenty of bars on south side. It's not great, but it's alright.

B'ham, AL is marginally better than Jackson, Mississippi if that gives you any perspective.
Upper echelon of stupidity. Hard to achieve on this board. Congrats.

Saw's Soul Kitchen in Avondale, Parkside Bar in Avondale or Garage are great bars. Carrigans is also a cool place with a good crowd.
Big Bad Breakfast is pretty good for brunch.
Rojo in Highland Park, also a great brunch spot.
Trimtab > Avondale, but Good People has the best taproom. Check out Hop City if you're really into regional craft brews.
If you're looking for late night greasy food, Al's Mediterranean near UAB is a must (good chance someone get's their weave pulled out while you're there.)

Oh this reminds me, if you're into Art, BMA is one of the best in the south. I prefer it to Noma and the High in Atlanta. It has a really nice variety and it's free. You can't really beat it in terms of bang for your buck.

Drink at Collins on Friday and Saturday. My boy Angel is a cocktail beast and if you're lucky Steva will be behind the bar as well. Follow angel to drink at lous pub on Sunday, dive bar cocktails FTW. Octane in homewood also has a great cocktail program.
Carrigans is legit as well. The food is solid as well as the cocktail program. Late night go to Marty's.
Food, high end go to Hot and Hot or Bottega. You could also just eat at carrigans and booze with your food. El barrio is very good as well. Sunday brunch you HAVE TO go to trattoria centrale. Best in the city hands down. Get there early, the line can be a beast.
If you want a cool diveish bar I would go to Parkside over the Garage eleven times out of ten. They also have a fantastic team of chefs kicking arse out of a teardrop airstream, "the hot box". Always have good bands playing. My favorite bar in the city outside of church nights at Lous. Right down the street from Parkside is post office pies(best pizza in the city). Saws soul kitchen(overrated but good) is right next to it as is Avondale brewery( I like good people over Avondale but the atmosphere in Avondale is legit)
Between Avondale and five points you have trim tab brewery, a james beard nominated restaurant in pepper place (Bettola), and one of the best music venues in the south(Bottletree cafe, pretty good bar also).
Five points kinda sucks outside of Highlands and Chez Fonfon. Although, the plaza at 3 am is a good time but Marty's is right down the road and the better late night option IMO
other than that steer clear of five points.
The only thing worth a shite downtown is Bottle & Bone near the BJCC. Todd English PUB is also in the same retail rev but isnt anything to write home about.
I promise you, my recs are the best you will get in this thread. Most of these retards will make you think Bham is a mediocre city.

That whole uptown area is alright. I like cantina loredo. Went to the one in Nashville while back and so I tried the one in uptown out to see if it was the same place (it was). Great guac.

I took a lady friend there a while back. It was good, but not as great as I expected. Tiramasu gelatto was the shite tho.

Years ago when I lived there the best places to eat for soul food were rib it up and family tradition. Don't know if you are a foodie or like dives but these would be in interesting parts of town. The best fried pork chops and greens ever. I don't eat like that anymore....but damn I miss those pork chops.

Anyone that goes to a new city(especially one with such a good food scene) and goes to a chain is a fool
Posted on 2/22/15 at 11:26 pm to Caplewood
I didnt realize cantina loredo was a chain until i just googled it.
I was gonna say, there are such things as really good regional chains that are worth visiting. But nvm, this place is everywhere

El Barrio is fricking awesome and local. It is one of my favorites in the city for sure. Much better than cantina Laredo not that that is saying much
. your girl would have slobbed on your nob like corn on the cob (elote) at el barrio if you had taken her there instead

Posted on 2/22/15 at 11:34 pm to Caplewood
Oh, no, i went to cantina loredo with my sister. I took the lady friend just to Bettola. nob slobbing occurred after that one.
Maybe ill bring the lady to el barrio next saturday. I just asked and she said shes never been

I live here in Birmingham and I have more fun than you can shake a stick at.
For next weekend:
-Mikey Cooley of the Drive-By Truckers is playing a solo show at Rogue Tavern downtown.
-Bham is a big time food city, Highland Bar & Grill is in Five Points, but very pricey.
- Pho Pho Vietnamese in five points is excellent
- Bars to visit: The Garage, Parkside Cafe, Plaza upside down in five points.
Assume your staying at Hotel Highlands?
Let me know what your looking to do.
cheers:
