Tell him he has 48 hours to get you money in hand or you're calling the police and pressing charges. My guess is that he gets you the cash quick.

Yes you can file a lien. No need to be a contractor to do that however a lien other than spooking him won't do much unless he is selling the house.
In no way can you go take installed items. If you have unused material i.e...a stack of Sheetrock you can go pick it up. If it is installed you cannot.
It is unfortunate but this is part of being in business so follow the proper protocol. And if you haven't already have a good attorney review or write you a nice small contract to protect you. That is a few hundred bucks well spent.
If I had a nickel for every dollar I got fricked out of I would have a boxcar full of nickels.

That depends. In some states a contractor can foreclose on the property.

Call the da's office. It's a crime. If they tell you it's civil, get a lawyer. The civil penalties are pretty steep for issuing bad checks.

And yes you can pursue a lien but that will take forever. For the most part it would scare a homeowner more than anything else.

The other thing a lein does is prevent the homeowner from borrowing against their property or taking out a second mortgage.

I would do all of things suggested in the thread - call the DA, file a lien, shame him on fb, flyers and signs
At this point (for me at least) it would only partially be about getting the money back. I'd be more concerned with fricking with the guys life because he's obviously a POS.

Oh well shite, you can probably take care of this even easier. Tell him to pay you or you're putting him on blast on Facebook. If he's a real estate agent, that should bring him around real quick.

East Baton Rouge. I am a state lic. Contractor & my contracts were written by a lawyer & it states must be paid upon completion. Also the homeowner is responsible for all court cost and attorney fees if legal action is taken.
