I've used H&R the past few years. I just start it and then immediately call their "tax pros" and have them walk me through everything.
I have a pretty complicated return and the step-by-step helps me out.

Let me guess. You are an accountant?
Tell me where I am wrong? My accountant used to send me a workbook that I had to complete. It's the exact same as the questionnaire that TubroTax, et. al. asks.
My taxes are pretty straightforward. I don't need to pay $800 for that.
Maybe I was getting screwed by this particular accountant, but so be it. I do it myself now.

Who pays for filing state? Filing state is ridiculousy easy.

Same. Dad does mine by hand on like January 1 and is usually pretty much dead on the money by using my most recent check stub. I give him my W2 as soon as I receive it and then I just wait for the direct deposit.
He gets the tax forms from the library or something like that, I want to say. No Turbo Tax or whatever else is out there electronically.
I'll be 1099 next season, so that'll be different.
I have a friend who I don't think has filed in 2 years. He filed for extension last year and then didn't do it during his extension period. He's service industry, but won't they catch this?! I'd be terrified.

I am not poor by anyone here's standards, but I think a cpa for a personal return is a waste.

I was, and if your return legitimately cost $800, it needs to be handled by a pro. If it is a simple return and you were paying $800, then I don't know what to tell you

Nailed it. You seem really intelligent and mature.

A part of me thinks you might be right. I was just pretty pissed with this accountant. I felt like she was just pushing the cost higher and higher every year bc I would pay it.

Bruh, why would you think about using software when you can bring it here?
Posted on 1/25/16 at 11:26 pm to East Coast Band
I have tried most of them and always find myself coming back to H&R Block's Taxcut...
I find it to be by far the most intuitive and easy to use and also like the way it lets you archive your info for next year's return. Watch the sales at Office depot and you can get it cheap as hell...
