Do you even French Foreign Legion Dude? Those guys are bad MoFo's...
So your example of how we should handle illegal immigrants is....France? I would say that's a mark against your position, not in favor of it.

Illegals and non-citizens comprising our military has been a staple for hundreds of years? Tell me more.

I'd let him stay. He served our country, and it was a two week technical blip. He thought he was a citizen? I mean he was able to vote. His story doesn't seem vindictive, just seems like he got lost in the system.

apparently would be fine with our military being populated with, and it's intelligence and methods being available to, a bunch of third world dudes whose only tie to this country is wanting to come here for stuff
it’s been a US policy to grant citizenship to foreign nationals that have served honorably in the military, sounds like old baw didn’t do his homework and apply through the proper process

They were not "illegal". They were immigrants that fought in wars in order to earn their citizenship.
It happened quite a bit in the Civil War.

Ok, but there's a huge difference between foreign nationals that we need/recruit for specific purposes and saying that anyone who meets a few physical standards from just about any country can just join our military and become a citizen. Total apples to oranges comparison.

Dude, I'm just messing with you.
This pool is going to be small. I'm not talking about the random person crossing the border to do construction, concrete work or Housekeeping at a hotel.
I'm talking about people wiling to give their life to fight for this country. If they're willing to do that, then we should have a path to citizenship for them.

I don't think our gubment sees it this way

I still respectfully disagree. I don't want a bunch of Venezuelans and Hondurans in the US military simply so they can have full access to this country and its resources in a few years.

yes

Go to the US embassy or military base in their country. Say, "I want to be in the Army, Navy, Air Force Marines." The two parties work up a contract if they can meet the requirements (Physically fit. Of service age 17-42. They can speak English. And can obtain a SSN and a green card). They come to the US for basic training. Complete their service. Become a Citizen.

can you link it?
He then clarified the post about that being an oversimplification.

He should get his citizenship unless he's got some skeletons we don't know about.
Posted on 3/5/26 at 11:52 am to lionward2014
I'm all for getting rid of anyone living off the country that's not a citizen. And yes, the law is the law, but that shite is bent, turned, twisted and stabbed all the time.
This guy should have been sent back after Visa is expired. But if we are enlisting a guy in the Marines and telling him this will get his citizenship, then I'm ok with him finishing the process to be legal.

He also had to give up his homeland citizenship to enlist.

Well we only deport criminals so deport him I guess because he’s breaking the law by being here.
That’s an opinion based on what is happening right now.
Otherwise of course it’s a nuanced situation. He should be fast tracked for citizenship.

If you don't see the difference between a bunch of third world foot soldiers and strategically recruited and leveraged foreign nationals, then I can't help.

I didn't say anything like that, just pointing out a long time US practice

This was the clarification:
quote:
The recruiters on the ground would be more selective in the process that I outlined.
I still disagree and do not want our rank and file military comprised of non-US citizens whose sole motivation for being essentially a mercenary is access to the US and its resources in a few years.
