You can go to BRCC, they have a program for plant operators. You might actually get hired before you even finish the 2 year program. It's common for people in the program, to get recommended for a job, before they even complete it.

Yea I saw that BRCC had an associate degree for that. I wonder if Southeastern has anything? I will have to check that out since that is my alum.

What else could I do with it then in the plants to make around 100K a year? I would have to make about 100K for my wife to stop working. We together make about 80K and then I make another 10-15K part time.

frick being an operator. Become an engineer of some sort. That's where the money is.

If you're planning on going back to school anyway and you already have a degree, just go for engineer.

More bang for you buck on this one...work in a plant and have a trade/skill set you can take anywhere. Plants for constantly looking for folks trained in E&I or controls.

Do you think this bc they married to young or can’t handle the home/work transition.

Plant operators work a shite ton of overtime and most of it isn't by choice. Sure we make 130K+ but you are never home. Hard to have a family like that. I have a nice checking account, a fat 401k, but I have a ex wife, child support, and hardly ever see my kids.

I wish I would've chosen a different career.

I would imagine I would have to go back to school for a while to be an engineer.

Not really, we own our on home and dont have many bills other than our vehicles and toys. What hurts us most is student loans which will be paid off in about 5 years.

You're going to have a 24 year old boss one day who just graduated from LSU with an engineering degree. His dad (a life long exxon employee) will hook him up with a job and he'll start off on day one making more money than you. You'll refer to this thread and wish you had listened to old PP92.

I’m at Houston Refing-LyondellBasell not everyone needs a degree, but I have a PTECH degree.

Trainee pay is $35/hr and once you get qualified on one job it moves to $41.60/hr. We have quite a few guys that had engineering degrees that have moved to operations because it makes just as much or more with none of the hassle. During turnaround operators sign permits and engineers work their arse off, with no overtime.

Engineers make about the same as an operator and work about the same amount of hours.

Only difference is that their base is a lot higher.

End of career, an engineer usually will win out for hours:compensation.

Their career path is what dictates their income and one frickup can cost them their career. Granted, you're talking slim chances. A shitty supervisor cant stagnate their career and have them job hunting at inopportune times.

However, an engineer is more likely to be able to jump from a sinking ship, although that can be debatable if you factor in everything.
