When I was 19-20ish I decided to join the KC after a few guys I knew, who were joining asked me to join as well.
It didn't take long to realize that all the active members were dudes who just needed a reason to get away from their wives and/or it gave them some sense of importance. After I became a member, I wasn't active at all.
Every year I would pay my dues and that was that, but there was also the Evangeline thing in which all HC senior girls are eligible for. Some many girls are selected to be a princess or some shite and one of them gets crowned Evangeline. In order for them to get picked to be a princess, they have to call all the members and ask for their vote.
Every year.. I think in July or August... Maybe September. You get a list mailed to you, it had the name of every girl eligible to be a princess, so all of these little girls would call all the time. They would be nervous as hell asking for you to consider voting for them.. I got to the point where I stopped answering.. I got calls from some of the older members asking "hey, can you vote for such and such". One time one of the members called me and was like "I love when they call me, they are so nervous. I like to give them a hard time because some of them will do anything for a vote". That's when I decided to not to renew.
When I decided not to renew, they had several people call me to try to convince me to reconsider and tell me what it means to be a member, etc, etc.. I told them I was still not going to renew, then they sent some dude to my house to see how he can "make it work for me". He gave me a spiel, I told him I was still not going to renew and that old dude was like "I live just north of Lafayette and I just drove here, from there. Will you at least give it one more year?" At that point I thought the dude was trying to make me feel bad, which only made me not want to renew even more.. So I told him "look, I can tell you what you want to hear, but I am not renewing. Have a good day". He tried to tell me some more BS and I told him I needed to get something done and just ignored him. He didn't say anything and just left.
That's my only experience with one of these groups I have.
Great answer

The Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles Mystic Shrine are the real illuminati. They control the world.

It's creepy as hell how Louisiana has to turn every organization or event into a child beauty pageant. That is unique to where you joined.
Other than that, my experience with KofC was similar. It was old men who didn't do anything but sit around in pointless boring meetings and harass you to buy insurance. I thought I was joining an organization that would be active in volunteer work and fun to be around, but was completely wrong about that. But again, some of that may have been unique to the parish where I joined.

Oh yeah, there was the insurance thing as well. They really didn't do anything in terms of helping others or giving to the community in any type of way. Like the American Legion, they have Bingo once a week (parents who send their kid to the Catholic school have to put in so many hours, which they give for working bingo).
On a weekend in October, every year, they have a fair and a parade. Volunteers work everything, but they are always having to kick people out because they were caught stealing money. We talking about people you would never expect. Oh and for the 4th of July and Christmas time they sell fireworks, so that's the other way one can volunteer, but I agree. It is also creepy how they turn it into a beauty pageant and all of these old men are the ones running it.

Guys in my KC council and 4th degree assembly get dunk AF during meeting. Lol

That council still sounds more active and fun than the one I got hoodwinked into joining.
On the beauty pageant thing, I was looking up some community events in some small towns where I have some family roots, and was surprised to see there are beauty pageants attached to everything for different ages. I'm sure it's no pressure at all for the little girls to know that the whole town will be there and they're going to rank the top three "prettiest" children and the rest can gtfo. WTF.
ETA: I'm not saying that's exclusively a South Louisiana thing, but it's where I've noticed it the most.

The KC Councils I am familiar with do many charitable activities such as, visiting the sick in the hospital, visiting people in nursing homes, putting together care packages for the homeless, donating money to seminarians, donating money to St Mary's home for God's Special Children, giving money to food banks or soup kitchens, gathering Coats for Kids that can not afford them, donate money to help buy wheel chairs for those in need, etc.
Many members I know donate their time coaching, scouting, serving the Church, helping with youth events, serving at soup kitchens, etc.
Many councils have family events, especially a family Dinner twice a year.
I have been a member over 20 years and I have never seen or heard of any beauty contests associated with the KCs.
The KCs do offer members insurance, but it is completely voluntary. The insurance is to provide protection for a person's family (if they have one). The KCs were created to provide a way for men to protect their families and to help widows and orphans. If a father purchases the insurance This will help his widow, if he passes away before her. Today the KCs help far more than widows and orphans.
If you join a KC Council, you can attend the business meeting and suggest events you think the KCs should be involved. If the members vote for the idea, then you will have a group of men to help you with the event.
Every member I have met joined the KCs because they have a very charitable and giving heart. They desire to put love into action. The KCs provide this opportunity.
I am sorry to hear you joined a non-active council. Many councils I have been around are active. Some more active than others. None have ever had a beauty activity for any age.
Find a council that fits you, and be as active as you'd like.
God Bless.

Apples and oranges. Rotary and Lions (and Kiwanis, not mentioned by the OP) are civic organizations. Which ones are worth a shite vary from town to town and depend on the individual chapter.
Masons are a fraternal organization, and KC is a catholic knockoff because the pope won't let catholics be Masons.
