What makes a "capital murder"?

I know a capital murder makes the murder eligible for death penalty but what's the definition?

What state are you talking about? Most states have different laws on the levels of murder.

In Alabama a capital offense is one that the death penalty is considered for. Generally these are premeditated violent felonies resulting in the death of another person during the commission of another violent crime.

Usually killing someone while committing another crime. Such as a robbery or whatever. Also killing someone below a certain age (3?)

A lady I know, her daughter was murdered last week near Bessemer in, what they say, was an attempted robbery.
They arrested someone today and said it's a capital murder

Yeah, homicide in the commission of a violent felony makes it a capital offense. I saw it in the news. That really sucks this time of year.

Capital punishment historically referred to any form of physical punishment, like a beating, hanging, lashing, execution, or caning. Since the death penalty is the only capital punishment still in use, a capital murder case is simply one where the death penalty is a possible sentence rather than just years or life in prison.
Side note, in Louisiana, a felony refers to any crime punishable by imprisonment with hard labor.

Capital offenses in Alabama include all of these types of homicides or deaths:
Committed by the defendant during a hijacking, kidnapping, robbery, arson, rape, sodomy, or sexual abuse
Committed using explosives, during a drive-by shooting, or while the victim was inside a vehicle or home
When the victim is under 14 years old
Where two or more people are murdered
Where the victim was a law enforcement officer, prison guard, or state or federal public official while on duty or related to his or her official capacities
When the victim is, was, or would have been a witness to any criminal or civil proceeding in any court and relates to his or her role as a witness
While under a life imprisonment sentence or if previously convicted in the past 20 years of another murder
Done for money (assassination)
