I was born in our Lady of the Lake hospital in Baton Rouge.
I spent the majority of my childhood and adolescence in Baton Rouge, St. Bernard's and Hammond/Springfield area.
I left Louisiana in 2005.
The only things I ever miss:
Food
People
(This can be family, friends, neighbors, really, people are just more friendly in South Louisiana.)
LSU Football
The rest of it? Sadly, the state is a mess and every time I come home to visit Baton Rouge or New Orleans it confirms my feeling that I would never move my family back to Louisiana.

All the things you listed don't bother me as much as the terrible weather. Let's be honest we have some of the shittiest weather in the country. I mean, I'd take it over Alaska and Maine and all the northern states that get cold as shite
So you're saying the worst thing about LA is the weather, and you'd still choose LA weather over that of at least a third of the country?
Way to take a strong stance.

The key is to have two homes: one in Louisiana and one in some place with really pleasant summers and snowy winters. That way, you can spend fall and spring in Louisiana for football, hunting season, and festival season while having somewhere else to go play in the snow and enjoy pleasant summer days.
The problem in Louisiana is finding a home that is convenient for all of the following:
Saints games, LSU games, freshwater boating/fishing, saltwater boating/fishing, etc. while being able to hold down a job, not be murdered by a long commute, and send children to school.

I moved away for 6 years and wife convinced me to move back home. Biggest regret. Now wife is ready to move back out of state. Hopefully soon. This state is in disrepair.

Just got back from Pittsburgh. I could move there in a heartbeat and not miss anything about this city

You wouldn't miss the food? Premonti Bros counts for high cuisine in Pittsburgh.

LSU games,
If there was anything that keeps me in Louisiana it's not a bunch of 17 and 18 year old college football players

quote:Born and raised generations deep in NOLA. Grew up in the 50s/60s there and love what it was. Married a NOLA girl there; we had our 3 kids there. But in 1984, because of work commitments, we left LA and family. It was culture shock for my wife and me; our kids were too young to really know. But homesick became a way of life for us inbetween our visits back home once or twice a year.
I love where I'm from, but the best thing I ever did was to get out years ago.
But time heals all things and our family is grown; we have 5 grandkids - none live in LA. They have an appreciation for NOLA but are horrified by the shabbiness, litter, crime, etc. they see when they do visit their place of birth. Most of our LA family moved out of NOLA years ago and have built new lives in other cities and parishes in and out of the metro area. Our kids did not grow up to be "Yats" and all have grad and post-grad degrees, unlike about half of their grown cousins, aunts and uncles.
We are at retirement time; we won't move back home. We see what it is and has become. We treasure our memories of growing up there. But those times -- they ain't dere no more. And they (like we) just ain't coming back.

I am fortunate enough to have an employer who doesn't care where I live. My job isn't dependent on the Louisiana economy, my income isn't based on my Louisiana residency & I can move anywhere I want. The ONLY reason I am in Louisiana is because of family. I have young kids & I have parents & inlaws who are getting old. My priority is for my kids to know their grandparents (and by extension their aunts/uncles/cousins/etc) before it's too late.
Having said all that. I choose not to sit back and bitch about how shitty Louisiana is. I choose to live in a nice, safe neighborhood and send my kids to a great 'non-mediocre' private school. I choose to travel with my family to other parts of the country so my kids can see there's more out there than just Louisiana & they'll be better prepared to decide where to go to college and/or live when they get older.
You sound like "future me"

I have a job that allows me to work/live anywhere, but my wife and I are going to start a family in the next few years and we want to be close to family. We will send our kids to private schools, and we are well aware that there are places outside of Louisiana that can offer a higher quality of life than what we have here. We travel often, to see those areas (both in the country and abroad). If we moved away from Louisiana we both feel like our travel time would be spent coming back home to visit family and friends.

I love how I don't even say something negative about LA and I'm already in your head.

I don't care for it June-Sept. The other 8 months it's pretty decent.
