What is your opinion on Ross Ulbricht (Dread Pirate Roberts from Silk Road)

Ross Ulbricht
There is currently a movement (mostly from his family) to free Ross because his crimes were "non violent. He is serving a double life sentence plus 40 years. Keep in mind some of his sentence has to do with money laundering, conspiracy to traffic fraudulent identity documents, computer hacking, and conspiracy to traffic narcotics. On top of that, he is accused of 6 murder for hire plots though IIRC none were included in his conviction.
I only ask because today a candidate for the house met with Trump and discussed his case with Trump.
Just curious where everyone stands on Ross. I am all for small Gov, and IDC how many or what type of drugs someone does as long as they don't harm others, but it's hard for me to advocate for his release based on the path he was heading down with the murder for hire to protect himself and his "empire"
I can't believe this is even something a potential lawmaker would speak to the Pres about honestly.
Keep in mind he was caught red handed with the admin panel of the silk road pulled up on his laptop so no doubt he was Dread Pirate Roberts.
BTW, a great book about him is American Kingpin: The Epic Hunt for the Criminal Mastermind Behind the Silk Road. Read it a while back and it's almost hard to believe it wasn't a work of fiction.

Deserves to spend his life in prison if for no other reason than his brazen stupidity to even try something so outrageous.

He tried to have his enemies murdered. I don't see what the problem is.

I think some of his hitman charges were him being setup.
He got caught with the laptop open. He was careless towards the end

That's part of his families argument. Not sure it flies based on the conversations he was having as DPR to the "hitman"/undercover agent

They say he laughed off a plea offer prior to indictment, so I have no sympathy for him.
Only kinda shitty thing about the case is that two agents on it later pled guilty for stealing /extorting a frick ton of bitcoin during the course of the investigation.

Not that it had anything to do with Ulbricht's guilt.

I'm not sure his story has been told accurately. Sure, he did nefarious things but I have a hunch he's the dark web poster child.

It's been a while since I've read about the story but any sympathy I might have had over his long sentence is negated by the murder-for-hire plots.

This is also part of his argument for release that the agents were dirty and had incentive to set him up for personal financial gain.

WIRED article on Silk Road Its a long but interesting read.

Yea i think the original one where they sent pics to him of the 'hit' is kind of indefensible. The one where they had the target in custody and they made fake pics by The bathtub. The chats made it sound though like he just wanted to scare the guy but he got almost lured into being violent

I don't see the problem either. Just taking a page out of the DNC playbook.

I thought the Silk Road was around way longer than 2 years

I sort of agree but I don't think that's enough to convince a judge he deserves a retrial or a jury that he was just an innocent guy caught up in a hit considering he still initiated the initial conversation to cover himself.

I've read that.
I admit I am always fascinated by people that build drug empires. Their rise is just as interesting as their fall and I used to wonder why many don't walk away at some point after they have made enough money but eventually realized that there are some that do and those are the ones you never hear about. People like Ross were driven by something different, though. His were ideals while others are greed and power and some are just in too deep to get out. It's an interesting discussion to me.
