Anyone who ditches their dog at a kill shelter is a heartless SOB.

I have a golden that would kill me to get rid of. I was worried when my wife and I had the baby that she would struggle not being the center of attention but she's like another mother to my little one. Between my parents and I we've had 10-12 dogs and my golden is by far the sweetest most gentle dog I've ever owned.

I'm in the middle of a career change and there are certain jobs I cant and won't take because of my dog at home. It sucks because they are good opportunities, but there's always something else. Regardless of the job, I would be depressed without my dog, especially in a new city.

That baw trying to get in the oilfield.

You're right. A dog is much better than a child.

There was a video of a family going to a shelter a couple days after dropping their dog off there. The dog was excited to see them and they were looking to adopt a different one because that one was sad and whining a lot after its mom or dad died.

The shelter realized it and told them to leave.

I would never give my dog to a shelter, but I have been considering finding him a new home. I work a very long schedule and I'm only home two hours before bed and right now I'm working nearly every weekend. I feel terrible because I can't spend more time with him and think he deserves better. All that said I'm doing my best not to give him up. But if I think for a second he would be better off with a family that can spend more time with him I would do it.

What's a legitimate good reason, in your opinion, to get rid of your dog?

Uh, to get the dog in a better home than you can provide? Geeze..

A couple of years ago, more like 5, a fellow OT Baller posted that he needed to place an 8-month old black Great Dane female that had been (basically) pawned off on him by a friend of his wife. As we already had a 4-year old female with severe separation anxiety, I jumped in and offered to take her, thinking a puppy would incite her maternal instinct and alleviate her anxiety when we were gone...the poster and I met up at a neutral site that evening to let the dogs meet. All went well, even though both dogs saw exactly eye-to-eye...at 8 mos, a Dane is pretty much full-size...and we took her home.

Within 2 weeks, our older female began bullying the shite out of the new one. They were the same height, but older one outweighed her by a good 50 lbs...it was all about jealousy...if the older saw her go near me or the wife, she would bulldoze her arse like LF7 and send her rolling, literally. When that escalated to snapping and ear-tearing when we weren't around, we placed the younger with a friend who spoiled the shite out of her (which is what she needed) She was retired so was home all day with her. She stil has the dog and it is the love of her life.

I would rather someone place an animal than force it into a less-than happy life.

LOL, maybe if you are a shite parent, but then you are probably a shite dog owner if you can't raise a child.

All of that could have been avoided with proper training.
