I call mine "pop" because something sweet, bubbly, and pleasing was missing from my childhood.

Map is not accurate for Illinois. St Louis area and southern Illinois definitely does say soda. Rest of the state says pop. Especially Chicago.

Complaints or Comments?
Dr. Burt Vaux, Cambridge University
He's got more creditials than you on this subject. I choose to believe his peer-reviewed data rather than your colloquial knowledge.
BTW The map does not terribly disagree with your stated option.

Coke. Always has and always will.
Stop at a store with friends,

I am from atlanta, born and bred. Huge fan of the state and subscribe to a lot of it's quirks.
People don't fricking call sprites coke here. It's 2015. Even Atlantans and other southerners are specific on what hey want.
That said, I ask for a coke or diet coke by default even when I have to settle for Pepsi. Even at Pepsi owned restaurants. I'm not even thinking about it when I do it.

I say soda. I got tired of people assuming I wanted Coca-Cola when I said coke.
