Yeah I really regret staying in BR to go to LSU because of the I-Hop on college.
No, but the BRPD, rampant crime, terrible public non-magnet schools, and awful traffic make me not want to stay here after I graduate.
I had a great time at LSU, and Baton Rouge has its positives (clean drinking water, great library system, BREC, LSU, friendly people, good food), but it has its negatives as well. I can completely understand why high school kids would want to get out of here and go elsewhere.
It just seems like Baton Rouge has all of the problems of a large major city with few of the benefits and most of the shortcomings of a small city. It's kinda like the worst of both worlds. It's only saving grace outside of the university is its location in South Louisiana which is home to a fun culture that Baton Rouge at least tentatively embraces.

Ole Miss is a great place for wealthy kids
Which makes complete sense to send your kid to North Mississippi if you can afford it.

Why pay out of state tuition to go to Bama? I know a weird black kid (oreo) who went to bama from Catholic High school in BR. He could've gone to Temple, but he chose Bama???

People that can't understand why kids would want to leave BR or new orleans and spend four years in Oxford have never been to Oxford.

Have you ever been to Oxford? It's a beautiful town filled with beautiful people. If you want your kid to be involved in high society, it's a great place to network. The greek community there is solid, the bar scene's great, and the women are in the top 2 in the SEC in both attractiveness and wealthiness. If you want your kid to grow up to be a wealthy snob and marry into another wealthy snobby family, it's a good place to go.
If you want that kid to grow up more grounded in reality, there are better schools for that

Auburn - no idea why it's little brother to bama for the LA ex pats
auburn's capped it's enrollment over the last decade or so, driving up the grades/scores needed to get in.... where as alabama has steadily increased enrollment. 15 years ago, Auburn had the higher number of students... that's not the case anymore.
Plus, both LSU/Auburn are land grant schools with similar curriculum... it makes more sense for LA kids to just stay in-state, if that's the career path they want to take.

If people want to leave BR, I would think there are better places to go to than Oxford.

I've been to Oxford. I suppose I like and appreciate Oxford for what it is.
But, come the frick on!

Yep, tougher to get into Auburn. I like Auburn and the surrounding area a lot. I've been there twice and really liked the campus, culture, atmosphere, ect. If I had a kid and I could afford to send him out of state, I really wouldn't object to Auburn.

If I grew up in BR I would have left too. I wanted some independence at that age and needed to get away. I think you grow as a person more away from the nest
An excellent reason, but I still don't understand choosing Ole Miss and Alabama over places that would actually give you something more unique in experiences or at least far superior education to the rest of the pack. I can understand UTX because of Austin, or Vanderbilt for education and Nashville being a nice big city, Georgia Tech for education and Atlanta to some degree, A&M for education alone. I can see the attraction to NYU, Colorado State, Cal, Tulane, Clemson, and Virginia Tech, as well as Duke. I can see wanting to live in a cool city or very near one. I just can't see the attraction to Oxford MS or Tuscaloosa AL as being desirable areas, especially if the reasoning revolves around status.

You realize, outside of maybe Clemson, none of the folks going to Ole Miss or Bama could get into any of those other schools, don't you?

I should be grateful to LSU. I shouldn't have come here, and I have hated it here for the most part, no other school would've taken me. I woulnd NOT want to go to ULL, Southeastern, BRCC, or La tech.

This. Ole Miss and Alabama are out of state schools that are accessible to average students with slightly above average financial means.

Perhaps, but if status is the driver, then I would think it would play a role in my decision making. Otherwise, why would I want to be stuck in Oxford Mississippi or Tuscaloosa Alabama? Seems a bit depressing.

And I'm not sure if the racial aspect is pertinent to your point or not. But I will say Alabama is one of a few SEC schools that makes a big effort to be "black-friendly" (MSU and LSU as well). A black student would not feel alienated at Alabama the way he might at Ole Miss or Auburn or A&M

It's the difference between faux status and legitimate status.

Outside of Saturdays in the fall, ULL is a very fun school. Lafayette has a great bar scene, great women, and can be a lot of fun. Plus, it's close enough to drive into LSU on Saturdays for football games.
If you're looking for a fun place and don't really care about greek life or football, ULL is not a bad place to go.
