It's a young, fairly liberal college atmosphere.
I'm not sure what Alabama you went to, but pretty much every student I know and even most of my professors seem very conservative. I grew up around LSU and it feels much more conservative than that.

I wasn't talking in purely political terms.

LSU takes anyone.
It's a joke. Whenever anyone chooses another school over LSU it's because they couldn't afford or couldn't get into LSU.
As for why kids go to Bama... There will always be kids that want to go away to college.

Do you all realize that BAMA is actually considered a good school academically? I transferred to BAMA from a top 10 Engineering school to finish my degree in Accounting. The Culverhouse School of Accounting is one of the best Undergraduate Programs in the Nation.
And outside of Accounting, when you leave the immediate region, the only thing most people will know about Bama is what the think of with LSU and Ole Miss outside of those specific areas they focus on... Football and SEC sports. That's not a jab. That's just what people know when they think of these schools in other parts of the country. I'd say with most degrees from these schools, a degree from LSU, Ole Miss, or Alabama is pretty much perceived as quite similar in most areas of this country outside of their respective states.

Alabama aint liberal
.
But to get back to the topic, a lot of BR kids go to LSU ( myself included). I didn't want to go here, but it was cheaper. My parents worked at LSU, I went to LSU for summer camps. I see many people my high school everyday. I got jealous when students from my HS who went OOS came back and told me of all the exciting things and people they met. But I really think going to Bama is a waste. Id rather go to Southeastern or BRCC than Bama

Duke is one of the best schools in the country. Ask someone on the street what they know about it and they'll say "good basketball"

BTW, Alabama is easier to get into than LSU. I promise. Kid didn't get into LSU wit a 2.8 and a 19 on act but did get into Alabama.

bullshite. I couldn't give a shite about basketball. I just know it's a phenomenal school, as do most others. I guess it depends on who you're asking and whether it's always sports related or education, and if education related then saying Duke is not the same as saying Ole Miss, LSU, or Alabama in other parts of the country academically. Not everyone is so driven by sports or thinks in those terms first and foremost.

I'm just trying to figure out what your point is. Alabama is not known as an elite academic school like Vanderbilt. That is correct. I don't think anyone is suggesting that.

I don't blame anyone that goes out of state for school. I probably would have done the same if I grew up in BR. Just don't go into major debt for an undergrad degree and don't act like you are so much better because you went to Bama or Ole Miss. My Bama friends aren't like this at all and didn't have any good friends that went to Ole Miss.

That's how bad Baton Rouge is.

Great out of state scholarship opportunities (definitely better than LSU)
Chance to get out of Baton Rouge and go to a school with a sImilar environment to LSU (big state school, SEC, southern)
Big Greek system
Networking in a lot of the same cities as LSU (Texas cities, Atlanta, New Orleans)

I managed to not take out student loans by working while at LSU, was a big factor of why I stayed, tuition out of state was just too much (I only had a 3.25 in highscool and 30 ACT, TOPS was all I was getting).
I might have ended up at LSU anyway, but I did take trips to Auburn and Georgia Tech.

That might be true but the people that I graduated Accounting School with at BAMA are doing very well for themselves. Not to sound like a douche but I have been very fortunate as well--and a certian level of my success can be directly attributed to getting my degree from BAMA.

All good Accounting students from SEC schools are doing just fine. It's nothing unique to Bama. I promise you.

It's for this reason why I think it's crazy when people get upset if a team loses out on a 5-star in-state recruit. I mean, if I had a choice to go anywhere in the country, the LAST place I'd look to go is the one too close to home.
Exactly. I had to get away. Luckily or me, it's the school I love.

Bama also has a very good medical school and an elite law school
There are 14 elite law schools and Alabama isn't one of them. It's really good though, better than LSU and probably places pretty well in ATL if I had to guess.
