It was to protect both from each other.

If society is secularist, it has nothing to do with the constitution. But in fairness to your point, today's government is immensely bigger and more pervasive than the founding fathers ever thought it could or should be.

Regardless of technology the Founding Fathers were very clear regarding government infringing upon the rights of citizens to bear arms. Government is kept in check when the citizens have firearms of equal power. They didn't restrict weapons... Musket for Musket,

Worked wonders for JFK. Go look at what happened to the economy after his tax cuts

It still boggles the mind that some people actually think money is better off in the hands of government than the people.

I would wager that half of the general population cannot do percentage or fraction calculations correctly.

Perhaps that many don't know what Celsius is.

or the boiling point of water

or their representative in the house

I guarantee a lot of people don't know the names of their fundamental local leaders because suburbs are such a blur as far as running together and people move so often, but that isn't the simplest fact they don't know.

distance to the sun
circumference of the earth
number of planets
capital of the adjoining state closest to where they live

Witches & Broomsticks

In the Middle Ages, Germanic healers were women.

Some of their herbal / mushroom concoctions were administered vaginally with a polished smooth stick.

Broom handles worked fine as the necessary medical implement to deliver the doses.
