Have you ever used night vision? What about a thermal camera? Now strap those on a silent drone with hellfire missiles. Your little AR ain't gonna do shite against that. And what about cruise missiles? M1 Abrams? Whatever else the government has hiding away? The idea that the second amendment will protect you from a tyrannical government is a fricking joke.

That said, you do have the right to own the AR, but let's not kid ourselves with the "fight big brother" argument.

Small minded. We have much in the way of examples of the successes (measured in different ways) of relatively basic arms used in resistance against seemingly vastly superior armed forces.

It boils down to scorched-earth= yeah no chance, but that is a much farther chance than a typical occupation.

Ah, so when defending yourself you think it’s more practical to have a handgun in your pocket than a rifle in your arms. Bless your heart.

This argument is getting so weak. Especially since if this were true, now would be the best time to go after the government.

Why? All it takes is an economic depression, major natural disaster or war.

How did that work out for us in one of the countless wars we’ve been in?

Our last several engagements have been half-arse attempts with soft rules of engagement. We weren't fighting a total war. If the US wants to steamroll someone, then we could do it. Tyrannical governments don't care about winning hearts and minds.

Look, I'm all for owning guns, but at the end of they day they do nothing to protect you from a government with our resources that is hell bent on destroying you. If Mexico decided to roll across the boarder tomorrow and our army rolled over for whatever reason in this hypothetical, the armed US population could put up a fight, but the armed US population could do nothing to stop the US armed forces under the control of a determined regime.

It seems this would only happen if some govt wants to come take your guns.

Because it hasnt seemed to happen when police are policing for profit, the govt is surveiling people without warrants arbitrarily, and political opponents are using the power of the state to win and influence elections.

Ever tried to handle a long rifle in close quarters? Not very practical.

Imagine a scenario where there is a major economic collapse or a failure of the power grid. It would only take a few days for society to start falling apart. While not likely to happen, if it did, I want another option beyond a handgun and a shotgun

Honestly this is much more likely than your firsy scenario.

Anyone that went through Katrina knows what happens when society breaks down.

So that insecure males, who live in constant fear, can feel good as but themselves. These same losers who dream of being the hero with the gun, that actual want violence to happen. They run drills in thier head about what they would do not attacked because they think it makes them tough.

Exactly

You make every person who wants to carry a gun carry an assault rifle. That’s much more practical to prevent gun violence

It’s kind of hard to keep an AR in your glove compartment
It’s kind of hard to get an AR into a night club
It’s kind of hard to stand on the street corner with an AR and not stand out

You wouldn’t have to stop and frisk anyone. You would know immediately who has a gun and an officer could ask them for their permit and registration.

These mass shootings are a drop in the bucket compared to the daily gun violence in this country mostly from handguns. There is the equivalent to a mass shooting almost everyday in Chicago

I have several ARs and see no issue in responsible hands. However, they are absolutely no protection from government. The government has you out gunned, out manned and in most cases out prepared. No one or small group of people armed with legal ARs are going to offer more than momentary resistance to armed Federal troops.

They need to join the NRA and learn about responsible gun ownership and safety.

Weigh in late here.

- They are a weight and recoil that shooters like.
- Many shooters want one and can afford it.
- I learned to shoot on one in 1975 at Ft. Lewis WA, as did many other military. They are a part of my past. Many M1 Military men purchased that weapon. My generation purchases this one
- I have "hunting weapons" The AR designs (to me) are not hunting weapons. If I want a non hunting weapon, this is the good choice.
- Many men want one-of-each and can afford to have them.
- As someone said, This is America, It is my right and I choose to exercise it. Some buy cars. Some buy boats, some buy cruise trips, some buy the latest IPhone or IPad, some buy weapons.
- The vast vast number of these are no threat to anyone, since we are not very likely to get invaded, as well armed as we are (as a nation). IMO they are a small (perhaps unneeded) deterrent to military invasion.
