I have a buddy who lives in Pontotoc. Pontotoc county is dry but the city is wet. In the city they can sell beer until 10 pm and liquor until midnight. So at 10 pm you legally have to really start getting fukked up lol

Tuscaloosa had the same law up until several years ago. We'd have to go into Jefferson County to get booze on Sundays if we didn't plan ahead

That's why I go to Catholic church and gulp down wine there to get my fix.

I'm not sure, but I think Shelby county on the other side is still no sales on Sundays. Restaurants can serve, but stores can't sell it. I forget the last time I was in that Target on 280, but they would set up little rope barricades on the beer/wine aisle on Sundays. Meanwhile back in Vestavia you can hit up the ABC and load up.

After the repeal, states with a lot of rural (protestant) voters were able to pass their own more restrictive drinking laws. Oklahoma was dry until the late 50's. Will Rogers once said they would vote dry, "as long as they could stagger to the polls."

People like the Louisiana Family Forum, a "conservative" organization that fails to see the hypocrisy of getting the government to ban stuff they don't want you to do, like play daily fantasy sports.

From memory, Mississippi didn't vote for the repeal of prohibition until the late 60s.

From fee.org:
"In 1908, Mississippi outlawed alcohol a decade before the passage of the 18th Amendment banned it nationwide. In 1933, the 21st Amendment ended Prohibition. It was ratified by 36 states in 288 days.
Meanwhile, Mississippi continued to enforce statewide Prohibition until 1966. As of May 2017, though, 32 counties in Mississippi are still considered 'dry.' Although 24 of those dry counties do contain 'wet' cities, eight of them don’t sell alcohol at all."

Because baptists hate things that compete with church for their pocketbook and time.

You should be able to buy wine as long as you tell them it's for communion

In South Louisiana (Baton Rouge), I knew far more Jews than Baptists and probably 50% of my friends were Catholics, who we know love to drink. I am not sure a single one of my friends or acquaintances in Baton Rouge in my 18 years there was a Baptist.

I never understood how Blue Laws survived as long as they did there. They're basically gone now, but the Sunday stuff didn't disappear until 2012 I think.

Rural Mississippi I get, but South Louisiana was always weird to me.

You can't buy alcohol before noon on Sunday in Mobile, AL. I was at Winn Dixie and there was this certain type of beer that my brother wanted that they didn't have where he lived. So I get the beer and go to the check out and cashier said we can't sell alcohol before noon. I look at my phone, it was 11:30AM. What the hell is waiting 30 minutes going to do? Maybe they thought I would find Jesus in that span of time and not get the alcohol.

Unless the student body changed, you went to school with some Baptists. They just didn’t tend to be the Bible thumping non-drinking non-dancing assholes.

If they were of that ilk, they probably went to Parkview instead of Episcopal.

depends on where you are at, when I was at LSU, bars closed at 2am, no booze sales before noon? no prob, go across the river, in Laffy, at the same time, bars didn't have to close, buy booze 24/7, I used to belong to a hunting club in the basin that had a little bar right by the boat launch we used that I don't think has closed in 50 years or more

Maybe, I certainly wasn't friends with any that I'm aware of and I was at EHS from 2-12. I went to Church (and even Temple a couple times) with plenty of friends.

My dad is from Mobile. He always tells stories about driving out of state to get booze back in the day.

I was pretty shocked when I learned about the ABC stores there. Fuk Jeff Sessions.

You can only by liquor in the ABC stores at a heavy markup, right?
